Just using three years ago as an example (same venue and ironically same opponent on Saturday) ...
The Saturday game was fairly even between IUP and ESU fans -- but nothing special.
Sunday, however, the IUP fans really turned out for the final and just about took over the gym. Ship had gone on Spring Break that year which is always helpful to the visitors. I'm not sure if Spring Break started yesterday or not.
That said, IUP's travel contingent has really grown over the past three years. The weather also looks favorable for tomorrow so I do expect IUP to have at least 250-300 or so make the trip. Perhaps more. A lot of IUP people I know said they'll make the trip 'if' there is a Sunday. Usually in this instance only the diehards make the trip both days. It's short enough you don't really 'need' to get a hotel.
The oddest thing you'll ever see is when the home team doesn't make it to Sunday. The Sunday game, when that happens, usually has a very empty feeling, crowd-wise. If they are lucky they may have 400-500. Mercyhurst doesn't travel well at all -- likely 30-50 people max.
Ship is a good venue for the West teams (on years the East hosts). It's a relatively short trip compared to the other usual suspects. Parking is very easy at Heiges. It's an older venue but they've done some nice upgrades to it.
I'll never forget IUP beating Ship in that final three years ago. About two days later the world shut down due to Covid and the following weekend's Regional was cancelled. That weekend was about 70-75 degrees and everybody had shorts on at the game.
Anybody else notice the two games tomorrow are an exact duplicate to when Ship hosted in 2020?Last edited by IUPbigINDIANS; 03-03-2023, 07:42 AM.

We were huge fans of the IUP women that year LOL.
IUP could have pulled it off but the women would have had to play in the Fieldhouse ... which they probably threw a fit about. Indiana does have the infrastructure to accommodate that many teams, hotel-wise. I recall that was an NCAA rule/decision because most D2 towns could not accommodate both events at the same time.

The Covid year shut down a 24-7 Ship team in the NCAAs that IUP had beaten in the PSAC final. That was John Castello's final team. Jake Biss never got in the tourney after his freshman year, when the last Dustin Sleva team at Ship reached the Sweet 16 with decisive wins over West Liberty and Virginia State, only to be beaten in the regional final by an East Stroudsburg team they had beaten by 25 points a couple of weeks earlier. A 24-7 Ship team would have a decent chance at qualifying this year.

Shawndale, David and Tomiwa made first-team All-PSAC West. This is just the fourth time in program history to have three make the first team.
Joe was named West Coach of the Year.
Shawndale was also named PSAC West Athlete of the Year (i.e. MVP). He is the 8th straight IUP player to win this award (an IUP player has won this award 11 of the past 13 seasons).

The other one mentioned, Noble Stein, is walkable from the KCAC. It's across from the old Grapevine restaurant (same side of Wayne as the KCAC). It's more of a small brewery-type bar. It's cool but doesn't have all the frills of Levity (which appeals to some). It's more just a bar where Levity has a lot going on.
Get in touch with me if you're up again this summer.

IUP definitely left a lot of meat on the bone today. I think they were so focused on slowing the tempo that it killed their own rhythm. At no point was there any flow to the game. It was partly the way the teams were trading turnovers and also how the officials called the game. Those types of slug rests are always going to favor IUP. I give ESU credit for playing about as good of half court offense as they can play. I also give their coaching staff credit for not trying to press. I think that caught IUP off guard a little.
Foul shooting was bad. No question it has to get better or not only will they not win tomorrow, but they’ll also be watching the Elite 8 from home. Way too many offensive rebounds given up, and that’s just an energy thing. That’s why I say IUP slowed things down too much. They looked lethargic at times. Tomiwa did have 11 boards, but he gave up a bunch of second chance opportunities too. He never really factored in offensively. Ethan bailed them out on offense by going 4-5 from deep. Dallis hit a big three, as he does. All it all it was just enough and in March, that’s all that matters.
All wins at this stage are good wins.
