In case you are wondering about Seton Hill's commitment to football, after what was to be an exhaustive national search.... Seton Hill hired a 31 year old former player who most recently was a high school football coach. https://triblive.com/sports/college/...football-coach

Not sure that's a fair assessment. The guy won eight games in back-to-back seasons at St. Joseph's as the youngest head coach in D2. That's pretty impressive even if the GLVC isn't the strongest conference in D2.

He can't do any worse. I don't say that in sarcasm but he literally can't do any worse. Once you hit rock bottom ... can't go any lower (other than dropping the program).

Football at Seton Hill won't be an easy fix.

Basketball-wise, they could be doing much better than they have the past several years. They underachieved big time a year ago. I think they had a couple bad apples who brought the whole team down.

I still don't know how they draw 100 fans a game for a whole season and sell the gym out for IUP's trip to Greensburg. That's actually pretty interesting.

Three years ago (Seton Hill's only win in the series against IUP) was probably the craziest D2 gym I've ever seen. And, not just loud. It was crazy. Students dancing on the baseline under the basket (during play), etc. That gym is a high school-type shoebox to begin with ... it was wild.

Seton Hill became a pretty big football rival with WLU back in the WVIAC days. Not because of the quality of the game (they were really bad even back then) but because of how their players acted. Seemed like the games were always about a second from breaking out into a bench clearing brawl. Rumor that in the 2009 game at WLU, several SHU played urinated on the midfield logo before the game...As I recall, that was a pretty brutal game with SHU being flagged 20 times for something like 200 yards in penalties and WLU coasting to a 27 point W. Next year WLU exacted some more revenge to the tune of an 82-36 win.

They were a feisty team last year. They had the brawl with West Chester and the kid mentioned above was the chief antagonizer in the IUP near-brawl.

Their team last year should have been good. That was a lot of wasted talent. Tark the Shark probably stayed a year or two too long.

              STANDINGS

              EAST

East Stroudsburg (3-0, 6-2) - Warriors should destroy the West basement this week
Shippensburg (2-1, 8-2) - Red raiders haven't played since the game in Indiana. Gannon and Clarion are in trouble.
Millersville (2-1, 5-4) - Trip to Johnstown is one of the leagues best games this week. Two very good teams.
West Chester (2-1, 5-4) - Ten days to prepare for IUP. Sometimes the long layoff helps. Sometimes it hurts.
Lock Haven (2-1, 3-3) - Bald Eagles will pull at least one big upset this year.
Kutztown (1-2, 6-4) - Golden Bears get a tour of Erie this week. Mercyhurst and Gannon on back-to-back nights. Three miles.
Bloomsburg (1-2, 3-4) - Getting ugly in Bloomsburg.
              Mansfield (0-3, 1-7) - Long season ahead.

              WEST

IUP (3-0, 10-0) - Need to avoid a hangover Tuesday. Crimson Hawks are rolling.
Mercyhurst (2-1, 6-1) - Word around town is The Lake Show is for real.
              Pitt-Johnstown (2-1, 6-3) - Best team nobody talks about ...
              Slippery Rock (1-1, 4-5) - Here they come ...
Edinboro (1-2, 3-4) - Mansfield and Lock Haven are exactly what the Scots needed. Best not slip up.
Gannon (1-2, 3-6) - What does a struggling team need for Christmas? Surely not visits from Shippensburg and Kutztown.
Clarion (1-2, 2-4) - Golden Eagles have some talent but aren't seeing results
California (0-2, 2-6) - Playing against East Stroudsburg for 40 minutes with 5-6 guys .... best do some carb-loading
Seton Hill (0-2, 2-6) - ESU and WCU visit this week. Yikes. Rematch of last year's brawl. Will Seton Hill crack 100 at the gate (combined)?

I believe the EAST still has an edge over the WEST in crossover, but the WEST did get some street cred back after the last batch.

                Tonight should be fairly even.

California picks up a conference win over struggling Bloomsburg. Vulcans -7 (prop bet: Vulcans score more points than fans in the seats)

Edinboro gets past Mansfield. Scots -5

Millersville in a romp over Clarion. Marauders -16

Slippery Rock should get past Lock Haven fairly easily. Rock -12

Shippensburg may roll Gannon pretty hard and send the Hammermill faithful to the edge of a cliff. Red Raiders -14

East Stroudsburg will blast Seton Hill in front of 11 to 13 people in the McKenna Center. Warriors -15

UPJ will beat (non PSAC) Cheyney in a glorified practice. UPJ -35

So, the two 'big games' of the night are Kutztown at Mercyhurst and West Chester at IUP.

The KU/Hurst game is a real tough one to pick. Mercyhurst is a house of horrors for most visitors -- aside from the Triangle and Two defense ... that's just a weird gym. It's claustrophobic and has very odd sight lines, etc. Kutztown likes to play up-tempo which is hard to do against the Lakers. KU has looked real good at times -- and real average at others. Anthony Lee finds a way. Golden Bears -2

On one hand, IUP is due for a flat game and WCU seems to know the formula. On the other hand, IUP is rolling. Call it a hunch but this one will be close for 30 to 33 minutes. IUP has a little too much in the end and finds a way to win. The Golden Rams are owed a little payback and I'm sure Bravado has reminded the team. Lombardi and Blair may be as entertaining as the actual game. Crimson Hawks in another exciting one ... -6

Boro wins 82-73. Your boy Staunch was a perfect 10 of 10 shooting for 22 pts.

You win the prop as VULCANS roll over the HUSKIES 102-70 before 88, count 'em, 88 happy, if lonely fans. Actually had a chance to play 10 players.

Let me know when you are up for a visit to Vegas.

Ship took a 12-point lead late in the first half and had a three-pointer halfway down to go up by 15. Gannon scored the last 7 points of the second half to cut the lead to five at the half. Ship quickly went back up by double-figures and led by as much as 23 (I think) before GU rallied to make it artificially close at the end. Gannon couldn't defend the perimeter in the second half. Ship shot 12/30 from behind the arc, including 9/19 in the second half. Most of the threes were wide open looks.

The Hammermill faithful (what's left of them) is pretty much resigned to the fact that this is going to be a long year. Gannon hasn't found a rotation that works. Tomorrow will be interesting ... If GU can't generate any offense against a team that gave up 110 points the previous day, then it will be a really, really bad sign.

The Griffins ran out of gas...They played 6 guys most of the night, and they started to foul out...ESU was VERY lucky at the end of the game. They received a gift in a loose ball call that went their way, and with .1 seconds left, could only watch as the Griffins had a chance to win the game at the free throw line. The Griffins missed, the game went to OT, and the Warriors played their best 5 minutes in OT...

Ship does have the four guys in the lineup who can drill the three, plus the first four off the bench. When they hit a night where those are not falling, it might not be pretty.

Riding the hot hand of my day in (mythical) Vegas yesterday, ... another night of PSAC games:

Millersville at UPJ: Certainly the game of the night. Two very good teams ... and two teams not getting the buzz they probably deserve. Both had blowout wins last night. East teams struggle in Johnstown (West Chester last year. Kutztown this year). Tough call. The raging crowd of 137 propels the home team. UPJ -3

Mansfield at Mercyhurst: Still struggling with the concept of the Lakers putting 110 on the board last night. They might put up 130 tonight. The Lake Show wins this one big. Mercyhurst -20

Bloomsburg at Slippery Rock: Bloom is a mess. SRU has found itself. This one is over by the second media timeout. SRU -28

Kutztown at Gannon: Kutztown is an enigma. Depends which version of the Golden Bears show up. This is a team which won at West Liberty and took IUP to overtime. It's also a team that lost to Lincoln and got drilled by 30 last night. Regardless, this is a group scoring 87.7 points per game. Gannon can't break 59 most nights. Kutztown won't get their average tonight but Gannon won't score nearly enough. Anthony Lee and Moe Williams will cause too many problems. Kutztown -14

West Chester at Seton Hill: As ESU found out, strange things happen in that yellow shoe box in Greensburg. Seton Hill may not be a good D3 team on the road, but they amazingly are a very tough out in the McKenna Center. The Griffins also drew 70 fans last night so things are heating up. West Chester gave a very intense effort at the KCAC last night. I doubt they emotionally duplicate it tonight. That said, the Golden Rams should be way too much for Seton Hill. WCU wins but perhaps by less than many think. This is also the first meeting of the two teams since last year's bench-clearing brawl. Rams -7

Shippensburg at Clarion: Gonna. Be. Real. Ugly. It will be raining treys in Clarion tonight. Ship -27

East Stroundsburg at California: Cal showed some life last night with a few new bodies in the rotation. Hard to tell how good they are as Bloomsburg is a real bad team. We'll find out tonight. Guessing ESU will be a tad more focused than it seems they were last night. ESU wins comfortably. Warriors -12

Lock Haven at Edinboro: The legend of Trey Staunch grew more last night. It takes another step tonight. Anthony Coleman still hasn't returned, but this stretch of schedule has helped keep the Scots afloat without him. Edinboro -9
