I dont believe it is like that anymore. He's eligible immediately as long as he meets the criteria. The transfer-release agreement is a general document, I dont believe you can pick and choose.

They may be better off at LB then first glance. Kelly most likely going to grad school which equals 1 more season and a surprise nugget YSU transfer may have another year after extended staff research from his YSU Career.

If they get Newell back that will be massive. He was outstanding down the stretch. The change in his play from the first couple games to the last -- once he was just playing and not thinking -- was incredible to watch.
The downside (for some) is this is going to become the new normal. Go to Clarion or Lock Haven for a year or two, improve your stock and get the hell out of there. The bottom half of the league becomes a farm system of sorts.
Due to the Covid chaos regarding high school recruits (lack of them getting spots) ... the lesser teams should be able to steal a couple guys here and there that otherwise the big teams would have swiped up. So, Timmy Linebacker decides to join the 2022 All-Freshmen team at Clarion next Fall, play one year and then head over to SRU.
