Thank ESPN for that. The original bowls were created by civic organizations to develop tourism and generate funds for local charities. I think the only remaining one is the Rose Bowl. The actual game was just the headliner of a multi-day celebration with parades, concerts, etc. ESPN did the math and saw how profitable the TV revenue was for what were then garbage bowls and started creating more. Profitable enough without a ticket sold, the revenue model basically uses ticket sales to cover the facility costs. ESPN owned, operated, or had exclusive production rights to most bowls created in the BCS era.Originally posted by IUPNation View Post
You know what is really nuts is that this game like every non playoff bowl game is meaningless. They did this to win a game that in the end doesn’t count for squat.
The bowls are a joke. I mean if they want to make some of them relevant, split D1 into three tiers and use the lesser bowls in the same manner as the FBS playoffs.
otherwise it’s time to ditch most of them outside of the big ones used for playoff games.
Forty years ago there were 18 bowl games. BYU was crowned NC by playing in the Holiday Bowl on Dec 21.
There are 47 today. Ridiculous!!

The Sun Bowl is the second oldest Bowl Game after the Rose Bowl. I would argue that, relatively speaking, it is the most significant in terms of value to the respective community. It's a week long event with a big parade and everything. It's a source of civic pride in El Paso.Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View Post

Correct. A lot of the no-name bowls are JV games.Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View PostI saw in the Oklahoma game that most of the roster is underclassmen. The new portal, and guys skipping the postseason, are going to end the traditional redshirt philosophy. When Joe Cool from a non-contender skips the bowl game, you're suddenly playing lots of young kids.

It's gotten ridiculous. I think Iowa's stud running back has bowed out of their game. He was probably more than half their offense. It would be like Boise State playing against Penn State without Ashton Jeanty.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

I'm totally okay with players having the ability to transfer like normal students. But maybe they can't enter the portal for 48 hours after their team's season ends. That would also prevent them quitting to enter ASAP.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

That “second oldest” claim is bogus given that the original game was played between two high school teams. The Orange and Sugar Bowl were both played for the first time in 1935. The first real Sun Bowl was played in ‘36.Originally posted by iupgroundhog View Post

Different direction here but who can forget Pitt playing in the Sun Bowl and losing, 3-0.Originally posted by TheBigCat2192 View Post

That game had insane wind. Neither team could throw, kick, punt, etc.
It was so bad it was actually entertaining.
