I think they figured out they’re not playing UNLV tonight. Penn State is owning both sides of the line of scrimmage so far. Just different level athletes than Boise has. Still, the Broncos have shown an ability to play in four quarter games even when overmatched. I think Jeanty was held under 10 yards in the first quarter.

      • Boise doing a nice job of doing what they do…hang around. If they get a stop to start the 2nd half they still have a shot. If they go down three scores it’s going to be a really uphill battle against Penn State’s defense. Jeanty has been a non-factor and if they have to start throwing, it more or less takes their best weapon out of the game. A lot of football to go though and Boise has never lost in the Fiesta Bowl.

        • It would be great if PSU can get a TD to open up the 2nd half but, overall, no matter what happens on the first drive I think their advantage in the trenches is going to wear Boise down.

I’d say you called that one. Penn State was just bigger and stronger in the trenches. Player for player on these rosters, Penn State just had too much although Boise sure had chances and hung in there.

              • Boise State did better than expected. They had their chances and they certainly did earn their bid.

The SEC laying an egg today was outstanding.

With Oregon-Ohio State playing each other, B1G is guaranteed two teams in the semifinals. B1G is now 4-1 against the SEC in the bowl season, with the only loss being Iowa (without its standout running back) by three points to Missouri.

I follow the SEC pretty closely and particularly Georgia since about 1/3 of my staff lives near Athens and are big Bulldogs fans. Obviously the rosters are loaded with talent but not to the extent they were even just a couple years ago. Tennessee was not a complete team and you saw that exposed last week. Alabama losing to Michigan was not a fluke. That was the weakest Alabama team I’ve seen since before Saban arrived there. Texas is probably the most complete team of those three (just can’t beat Georgia) but I’ll bet they’d be an underdog against Ohio State, Oregon, and Penn State. Georgia is far from the team it was a couple years ago and it wouldn’t shock me at all if their season ends tonight, but it also wouldn’t shock me if they made it to the final. They’re inconsistent and could have easily lost 4 games.

I’m not a betting man but if I was I’d have to think hard about predicting a Penn State vs Oregon/Ohio State rematch for the national championship. I believe any of those three teams is better than the top SEC team this season.

The See Everyone Cheat conference had its time when they could pay under the table. Now that you can legally have a payroll, the BIG plays in bigger markets which means more payroll money. The BIG may just win the long game and roar past the SEC as the top conference.

I think the new look will mean a more even distribution of talent among the top conferences in the long run, but I believe the distance will grow between them and the conferences that can't keep up with the monetary arms race. We'll see how Arizona State does today, but the Big 12 and ACC seem clearly inferior to the Big 2 at this point, and the Group of 5 teams have a big mountain to climb. The positive is that at least it might not be the same 4-5 teams dominating every year.

The SEC had a down year. It happens.

Look at the PSAC in basketball this year. It may be, overall, historically awful. There's 1-2 good teams and a whole slew of average.

A lot changes from year to year. Next year may be totally different.

ASU best not get rail-roaded today.

ASU and Boise getting byes is a whole different discussion. What would Boise's record be playing a BIG or SEC schedule? My guess is their record would be much different.
