Remember they lost a LB in the preseason last year. Name slips me but he was projected to play a lot. I believe he is back this year.

I forgot all about the Cal U transfer. I agree, WR is pretty solid.

            • This is pretty cool. If my 5 year old son wasn't raised to hate IUP, he'd think this was really cool.

That's one from the Mon Valley -- and, a fairly significant one.

Three other DBs from Cal remain in the portal -- Jermal Martin, Dominic Solomon and Naszhir Taylor.

Any inkling any of them will be joining Lockhart?

I agree somewhat but SRU fits that tag more. There is a total dislike for Rock, Cal was always respected by IUP by Cig and company especially during the Lockhart and Keller. That could change if several of these Cal portal guys join OC Wilson. Not the first switch in players, Kirby Griffin and Slappy landed in Vulcan nation Griffin was a great one.

                    • Two articles in the Gazette today.

One is kind of a Spring update and the other is on Larry Wilson's transition.

The article about the team answers a lot of our questions, i.e. players opting out of spring practice, the search for key transfers, etc. Personally, I like the team. I think we're in pretty good shape, especially if they can fill the gaps with quality transfers.

I don't understand the need for another QB to be a backup when you have 3 other QB's on the roster who were all highly touted coming out of HS. Maybe I'm missing something there. Also, I wonder about the Kicker role. We lost our returning Kicker. Do our current candidates have what it takes to be the difference in important games?

Well, one of the QBs (Schmidt) is now a fullback. I'd guess they aren't real warm and fuzzy about the other two. It could also be there's more to the story than Tort let on ... perhaps he's not anticipating one of them still being here by the summer.

Now, the obvious question comes up ... what 'quality' of a transfer QB is going to want to come here with what appears to be a starter in place for the next two seasons?

As noted by IUPBigIndians, Ben Schmidt is now a fullback. The issue is that neither Logan Horn nor Jack Krug has ever played in a college game, let alone taken a snap or thrown a pass. If Sexton were to get hurt, would you be comfortable turning to one of them yet?

They like Aiden Spitler and Nicholas Morrison, both of whom redshirted last year, and they are high on the all-state incoming freshman from York Catholic, Nick Andrasi. I think they'll find one they can count on among them.

That's the challenge for Tort and the staff. But they got Jalen Reese a few years ago from Toledo and he turned out to be pretty good. He arrived before Maxwell signed, but he knew they were in the market for a starter.
