Which kinda speaks to the intangibles that separate a successful coordinator from a successful HC. On one hand, Osborne didn’t impress much as an OC, but he’s been successful as an HC. On the other hand, RW had great success as a DC, but that hasn’t translated into being a great HC.

HC Wright had made Charlie Flohr and Joel Osborne co-Offensive Coordinators. Joel was young and I can't imagine how challenging it must have been for Flohr and Osborne to make decisions that might have conflicted with with one another. Flohr was alot older, of course. Joel was pretty young, but I'll never forget the story shortly after Scott Bostwick was made HC after Mel Tjeerdsma decided to retire. Osborn had been on the sidelines as a grad assistant and Scott Bostwick talked how Joel and he were driving on a recruiting trip and Bostwick started going into some coaching spiels he and Coach T talked about, and then broke the news to Joel as he was behind the steering wheel and asked him if he would be interested in an Assistant Coaching position with the Bearcats. Joel said he was dumbfounded. I think I remember he was put in charge of receivers. Coach T used to rave how Osborn was always studying film as a player. I think I remember correctly Tjeerdsma had said he never had anyone who studied the game watching game film like Joel did. Bostwick and Tjeerdsma both had said Joel was invaluable as a recruiter. They could walk into a player's family living room and Joel's charisma would just take over. NW Bearcats lost BIG with recruiting when Osborn left. His FaceBook is a fun follow. Hugely positive! They love him down there in Kansas! Impressive college. Great football environment. Beautiful stadium. Terrific family with wife Audrey and their four kids.

Maybe that was a Northwest failure. Correct me if I’m wrong, because it’s been a while, and I’ve slept since then, but Joel never had the offense or play calling to himself, did he? If I remember right, he was never more than co-coordinator with Coach Flohr. Flohr was the senior member of the staff and also had the QBs. If that’s the case, he never had complete freedom to impress.

          • Oh yeah, HC Joel Osborn just took his team to a three-peat this past week winning their third consecutive Heart Of America Athletic Conference championship title. Congrats to Joel and his Ravens! Yep, they like him down there in Kansas!

Oh if only it were that easy!!! Northwest will have to beef up their recruiting budget, their number of assistant coaches, and for sure find some cheating/slush fund NIL cash before much changes no matter who they bring into coach. I am absolutely certain that many D-2 schools would really like to have the staff at NW....but....It is a results based business, and everyone in those seats, (coaches and administration) knew that when they signed on.
I just want all involved, fans and "supporters" included, to remember that there are real people involved, that love the university and community just as they do. That is what makes this situation so difficult. Many of the personalities being criticized are true Bearcats, and have been a big part of the past success. We have to be very careful of what we wish for, and understand that the grass isn't always greener....but.....maybe it is?
              Always a Bearcat!!!!
Dude, can we just stop with the money excuse. The money thing is a complete copout. This spiral didn't start and continue on because of money. Half the ship started taking on water immediately and instead of baling water, holes were cut in the hull. Obtaining savior elite transfer RBs and recruiting one has been the greatest accomplishment offensively of this administration.

Nonzero chance NW simply returns to what it was PreMel. To dust you shall return.

We all have what we excel at. Understanding what that is and how to surround yourself with people whose strengths compliment yours is a skill.

That is correct. NW ended up being in a precarious position of RW was the next logical choice of HC and retained the DC role. Then who was to replace the former HC who was also the OC. Instead of selecting one, 2 were chosen to keep everyone content? A series of personal decisions as opposed to business decisions have been made along the way.

                      • Is it time for Tatum to pull the plug on RW?
Would firing all the offensive offense coaches increase Wright’s odds of staying?

It might come down to Tatum asking for a housecleaning with the provision that “if you don’t clean house, you can join them”, as RW seems very reluctant to fire friends he’s hired.

Unfortunately, given the lack of a decision so far, something tells me that either a)The administration won’t do anything and we’re stuck with the same situation as before, or b)Out of courtesy to RW, they’re waiting for him to jump to a D1 job in the off-season so they can frame it as a positive move instead of a firing, in which case his replacement can do the housecleaning.

What if they just don't get rid of any of them? Will attendance drop below 1500?

Hate to tell you but it's all about money nowadays.

For those of you that want AD back, it going cost NW a huge chunk of change for his salary, anything he thinks needs updated, and additional staff just to start....plus using money to draw in players.

It seems like a really bad take about how NW doesn't need investment to raise the level of competition there. Is money the only thing? Of course not, but If you're trying to compete the Jimmy and Joes against UCM that was able to scrounge up 100k to keep Zebrowski under center for another year, with out ponying up some cash, you're deluded.
