Mary and Minot have struggled for relevance in the NSIC, hard to imagine UJ's prospects being better.
Maybe some sort of combination of Travel Cost savings, and to get a little more notoriety (unlikely), but stability is the best guess.
They see us floating UMC and Saint Cloud and figured they might as well get in on that.

It seems unlikely that Men's Soccer will thrive at UJ - who will they play? JV teams may vanish since they are not widely maintained. Teams will likely see fewer home games in 2024 than in 2023. Additionally, there could be several years without competing in national championships or regionals which happened regularly at UJ. Just my thoughts. I wish them the best. The next two years will say a lot. Mankato football won't be kind to you.
I believe that this is at least in part because UJ went from a conference with 12 members to a conference with 6 members, and also burned a lot of bridges with their previous conference, most of whom would be some of the closest nearby non-conference options. I think the home game situation will actually improve in 2025 once they join the NSIC, if only because it's such a large conference.

As for men's soccer, they could maybe go the Mary route and try to get into the GNAC or RMAC as an affiliate. I don't think they're very good at that sport though, so it's definitely likely that they see this as an opportunity to axe it

Still no coaches listed. I'll ask about that this afternoon. Getting pretty late in the summer.

In the GPAC, Jamestown had only one conference opponent within a five-hour drive (Dakota Wesleyan at 4 hours, 5 minutes). In the NSIC, 11 conference opponents are within that same five-hour footprint.

What is relevance anyways? Is it only to win championships? Is that all that matters in Division II sports? Or is the student-athlete experience supposed to be about more than that?!

The GLVC is launching a men's volleyball league next season. Not the most convenient option in the world, but it's the best option the Jimmies have. Volleyball, both men's and women's, seems to be their bread and butter sport, so they might be a little more incentivized to keep it around and find it a home. The GLVC might be interested in having them as well to give their new league a bit of credibility out of the gate; I'm admittedly no men's volleyball expert, but a quick glance at the men's volleyball rankings from the past season shows that most of their squads were pretty mediocre

University of Jamestown Director of Athletics Austin Hieb announces the restructuring of the Jimmie men's soccer coaching staff for the 2024-25 season only.
Nick Becker, Jimmie women's soccer head coach, will be the Director of Soccer Operations while Austin Shafer joins the program as the men's soccer interim associate head coach. Chris Herlihy will join Shafer's staff as a graduate assistant.
"I'm excited about the restructuring of our staff and the additions we've made for the 2024 men's soccer season," said Hieb. "Coach Becker is a strong leader who will serve our men's soccer team well. Coach Shafer comes in with experience in the program both as a player and a coach, and Coach Herlihy will bring passion and outside knowledge to the program. I can't wait to see what the fall brings for this group."

                • "Director of Soccer Operations" and "Interim Associate Head Coach" almost sound like made-up titles. I'm inferring that that means those two will share coaching responsibilities, but what a vague and confusing way to word it

                        • Laker, the topic isn't "Will Jamestown be accepted into the NSIC?" The topic is "Should Jamestown be accepted into the NSIC?". That was answered long ago, but some apologists keep trying make terrible points on their behalf

                          • One of the very first schools to go through D2's new expedited reclassification period, meaning they'll be eligible to compete in postseason play by 2026 instead of 2027. Look out world!

Typically the title of ‘Director’ rather than Coach is given to someone who doesn’t have other university responsibilities. And you typically see it in golf. Also, in many instances, the director is ‘head coach’ for both genders.

                              • Maybe it's just me, but the President of the University and the AD not wearing UJ colors or swag or even a lapel pin for the press conference isn't a great visual.
