Okay, you got me there - I forgot I posted that offhand comment.

They are subdivisions under NCAA DI. We can get into semantics, but Michigan and SDSU are both DI football programs competing for different trophies. It's an absolutely insane idea, but whatever.

SDSU and NDSU desperately want to be seen as FBS caliber programs though, so I have no qualms about judging them on those standards.

I don't follow SDSU or NDSU football, so I don't know if they (or their fans) consider themselves FBS caliber programs. You would know better than I and now I get your comment.

I almost think the lesser divisions have higher standards - but they also have far less to gain by having a winning football team.

The mistake we made was tying athletics to academics to begin with - we can thank the Ivy League for that. We're way too far deep to switch to the European model of athletic development, so gotta work with what we have.

Was just a quick comment in the moment. I knew Morningside would immediately be commented on by someone here that they'll never leave NAIA because they're comfortable. So went with the 2nd school of the cuff

NDSU occupied a space where they could have their cake and eat it too. They were beating semi-quality FBS teams and getting College Gameday, but had the safety net of an FCS trophy to contend for. To sum up how insufferable the fanbase was - people were unironically making signs that said "We Want Bama." I even heard once that there were calls to join the Big10 but I can't confirm it.

SDSU was the little brother, and now they are in control of the bracket. It's made that fanbase almost as equally as insufferable. I've talked to some alumni who are frankly kind of embarrassed by it because they didn't want to stoop to the level NDSU is on. It's also bled into the other sports, which are not quality programs even by NSIC standards. One Jacks fan told me that SMSU (and the NSIC) eats their lunch on volleyball recruiting, for example.

IMO - if a school wants to be DI, let them be DI and deal with all that comes with it. The more contingencies we put in for the lesser DIs, the worse the overall product becomes. I also truly don't believe Augustana, MSU, GVSU, NWMSU, etc. - have anything to add to D1 by any tangible measurement, just as I believe SDSU and NDSU don't add anything to DI, especially from a top down perspective.

I don't hate SDSU - they were very nice by letting me prepare for grad school with them. A couple of guys on the team gave me some great insight for a class project I did and I'm grateful for it. The games can be really fun. I'm just tired of the lunacy. I chose to be a fan on my own terms - which included secretly rooting for Augie last night despite half of my team sitting in my section lol.

That's fair, and I agree with Morningside.

Dropping the 1AA for the FCS label has confused many casual football fans. I hear so much confusion on the differences in FBS vs FCS and how they’re all D1.

That distinction never changed how the casuals understood. Let's not kid ourselves

That's a pretty bleak way of looking at College athletics, I wonder why you watch/care about anything college then that isn't SEC Football/Baseball/NCHC Hockey/Big XII basketball

                    • If NDSU and SDSU could find a way to add 21, more football scholarships and move to FBS. Where they would fail vs. the big boys is in NIL money. Read Ohio State handed out 20 million dollars to their football team alone. They would be lost in the myriad of mid majors like TN. Martin or N. Alabama.

It's odd that you care about my DI viewing habits, but that is a fairly accurate description - the only two exceptions being my one in-person SDSU game a year (only if I've heard of the opponent before), and Mavs hockey (the team that did this funny thing called going to the national championship recently? The Summit League should try it sometime).

By all means, if the PFL is what you fancy - don't let the fact that it's terrible football distract you from enjoying it. You are right about one thing though, you don't follow SDSU/NDSU - but hey, it's cute they "Want 'Bama," right?

I'm just tired of all the pandering to the 150 DI programs that aren't worth anything to DI. At least most DII/DIII schools know their place.

                        • Anyway - enough arguing over whether USC-Upstate is a god tier basketball program worth watching. I originally came here to say that Dakota State is 3-0, having blanked Jamestown 16-6 during HoCo, before actually having to discuss how fascinating Drake's football program is.

Football vs Jamestown (N.D.) on 9/14/2024 - Box Score - Dakota State University (dsuathletics.com)

Too bad it's too late to get them in instead.

The people with decision making ability who looked at Mercyhurst and said "That's the epitome of athletic competition - let's allow them to suck resources while they don't compete" and the other 149 programs exactly like them.

Watching pro sports with some of the people in this thread sounds like a nightmare. "Yeah, the Sioux Falls Storm should move up - that's exactly what the NFL needs."

I could provide thoughts on the NCAA tournament - but I have a feeling that won't go over so well. Be wild if the NBA worked like that though.
