Should Jamestown be accepted into the NSIC?

The nearby reservations are some of the most impoverished areas of Minnesota and it's reflected in per capita crime rates of area communities. Cass Lake is another town that had a huge crime problem, though I think that had to do more with transplants from the Twin Cities area. Also, in my experiences in northern MN - it seemed to me like it was a place where a lot of oddballs would shake out (due to being so secluded) and some notable crimes occurred because of that as well.

That being said, crime statistics should always be taken with a grain of salt - I'd much rather exist in Bemidji than North Minneapolis (or even St. Cloud), but that's personal preference.

I'm from a reservation community and I was also the top student in my American Indigenous Studies program at MSU, so there are my qualifications.

This is off subject, but I will ask anyway. If you do a search on highest crime rate cities in Minnesota Bemidji is #1. My impression is that Bemidji is a nice city nestled in the woods surrounded by clean lakes. What gives?

I think the biggest piece is the “per capita” portion of the statistic. I know or have known, many that went to school there or lived there, and I haven’t heard safety concerns. I am like the previous poster, I’d much rather live there than the Twin Cities or St Cloud

I would rather invite the WIAC schools TBH. I just don't see why we need another UMC or at best UMary.

Bingo. Per-capita statistics are really only useful to a person that knows how to interpret them, and often they actually become moot in relation to any town under 100,000.

I haven't spent extensive time in Bemidji, but I can say this with confidence - a person looking for trouble there will often find it, but the average person will be just fine. And that's really true of all places.

Bemidji is a nice town. Three colleges, a D1 hockey program, a beautiful arena that brings in good entertainment, loads to do outdoors, I recall liking their downtown a lot. It's the hub for that part of the state so it has nice shopping. The winters are tough and it's pretty secluded, but that's neither here nor there.

Hypothetically, I think most would. But I honestly think the NSIC would have better luck bringing in a MIAC school.

Aside from Milwaukee and Superior, the WIAC has had virtually no movement for the entirety of it's existence. It's pretty tight-knit.

Not sure if Parkside was ever a member or not. I don't think so.

Having WIAC schools in the NSIC would severely hurt current members. Wisconsin is the 2nd leading producer of our leagues football players behind Minnesota and it's not by a whole lot. Just take a look at Kato, WSU and AU rosters/

I would assume the “lurkers” work for the NSIC, the conference will “vote” how the commissioner tells them too, this is a done deal in my eyes. The pumpkin heads will replace Upper Iowa as the lovable loser of the league.

There hasn’t been a reason FOR Jamestown yet, just against SCSU and UMC. Which I think many of us are probably on board with.

Last I saw from the commissioner is that they weren't blown away by anything and that we are comfortable as is. That could just be blowing smoke, but I'm not sure why they'd do that unless they know it might irk certain schools

I'd be hard pressed to let Gustavus in, but that's just the local in me. They are not as loaded or athletically dominant as other MIAC powers so they probably would never but it would be kinda neat having essentially a neighbor school to beat up on
