The No. 18 University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs had a dominant performance against the No. 22 Northern State Wolves on Saturday, winning 34-7. UMD and NSU are now 5-2 overall with the Bulldogs being 5-1 in the NSIC while the Wolves are now 4-2.
The Bulldogs started the game off quickly, with Joey Flaherty getting a 21-yard reception, followed by a Ryder Patterson 15-yard rush, plus 15 more for a horse collar tackle. Catcher Langeness punched in the first touchdown of the game to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. The defense followed by forcing a three-and-out on Northern State.
The Bulldogs found the endzone on their second drive too, this time aided by a flea flicker 44-yard pass to Peyton Menzel before Nathan Litke reached the endzone to make it 14-0 UMD.
The defense continued to frustrate the Wolves in the first quarter, with Joey Krouse stopping Northern State with a big interception, setting up UMD's offense in Wolves territory, but an untimely fumble at the start of the second quarter resulted in the Bulldogs getting no points.
The Wolves went three-and-out again, after a near-interception by Jonathan Shrum. Catcher Langeness and the Bulldogs continued to move downfield, but had to settle for a field goal.
UMD would get the only other score of the half on a Drew Henson 47-yard field goal, extending the Bulldogs lead to 20 at halftime.
Northern State's offense continued to struggle, with UMD piling on the pressure with back to back tackles for loss from Jayce Walrath and Ean Ackley. UMD got another touchdown just three plays later, with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Eggert to Catcher Langeness for his second touchdown of the day.
Jayce Walrath gave the Wolves' offense fits all day, with a pass breakup and sack on the following drive stopping Northern State again.
Northern State looked to get on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter, but another Jayce Walrath sack got a big stop for UMD. On the following drive, Ryder Patterson shined with a 39-yard reception, before Francis O'Malley scored another touchdown for the Bulldogs to put the game at 34-0.
Northern State eventually found the endzone late in the game, with a Brodey Sauerwein Touchdown giving the Wolves their only points of the game. The match ended shortly after, and UMD picked up a crucial 34-7 win.
