For the first time since November, 2019, Playoff football is back! In case you missed it, Brandon Misener and myself joined hosts Wayne Cavadi and Bethany Bowman on their DII Nation podcast earlier this week to discuss the playoffs. You can find that conversation here.

Regional rankings releasedThe first round of regional rankings came out this week and I was very pleased to see three SAC teams in the Top 10. I’ve been a little worried for the last few weeks that the SAC might be a one bid league this year and while that could happen, it looks promising for the SAC to have multiple playoff teams for a third straight year.

The Division II Football Championship will be here in just a few weeks. Each season brings new fans and followers to Division II and if you haven't been through a playoff season before, it might be a little confusing to follow the process and understand how the post-season field is formed.

It’s been my custom over the last few years to lead off each column with my own ranking of all the SAC football teams from first to last. Usually my rankings resemble the official standings pretty closely, but I am factoring in my opinions based on what I see from watching nearly every SAC game in person or on tape.

Before we get into the weekly rankings and the schedule of upcoming games, there are some headlines that need attention. Catawba cancels second straight gameI was really hoping we would not have to deal with cancellations once we got into conference play, but it happened last week and it happened again this week.

As excited as I get for the start of the football season on labor day weekend, I feel like the season really begins when we get into conference play. That’s when we start to see how these teams truly measure up against one another and each week becomes a playoff for the conference title.

At long last, the fall football season has returned. It seems like it has been forever since we had D2 football, but it was just a few short months ago that we saw all nine SAC teams in action for the unprecedented (and hopefully never repeated) spring season.

The first full week of the SAC’s spring football season certainly delivered its share of drama. Lenoir-Rhyne needed two defensive scores and two overtime periods to prevail at Newberry while Carson-Newman rallied from a 10 point deficit to take UVA Wise to OT, where they needed a further four frames to secure the road win.

On Tuesday, September 29, the South Atlantic Conference announced formal plans for an abbreviated spring football season. The news came a little sooner than I expected, but I am very happy that the plan has be released so all involved know what to prepare for.

Lenoir-Rhyne advanced to the super region two final for the second consecutive season with a 49-21 win at home over Carson-Newman. The Bears earned the privledge of hosting a third straight playoff game with the regional final set to kickoff at Moretz Stadium against West Florida of the Gulf South Conference.
