Bulldogs Shutout Rams for Third Straight Win

WINSTON-SALEM, Nc. — Bowie State defeated Winston-Salem 21-0 on Saturday at Bowman-Gray Stadium. The Bulldogs scored all 21 points after halftime, putting together four scoring drives from the third quarter into the fourth. The defense helped define the shutout with three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and three sacks while holding the Rams to 223 total yards. BSU improved to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in league play, while WSSU fell to 0-6 and 0-4.

The Bulldogs kept the Rams off the scoreboard on two red-zone trips before breaking a scoreless game with 21 unanswered points from the third quarter into the fourth. Both red-zone stops ended with field-goal attempts, and WSSU finished 0-for-2 on red-zone scoring chances. Once BSU began scoring, its ground game provided the bulk of the offensive production, finishing with 219 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

The defensive finish matched that offensive separation. The Bulldogs recorded late interceptions while playing with a fourth-quarter lead, and BSU finished with three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 14 points off turnovers. The Rams were limited to 223 yards at 3.5 yards per play, including 85 passing yards while taking three sacks. Maximus Jones ran for 76 yards and a touchdown, and Michael Thompson III added 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown.

After BSU's opening possession ended with Chris Coleman's 39-yard punt, WSSU moved from its 29 to the BSU 16 behind Jayvion Danzy's 40-yard run, but Brayden Jeffries lost 9 yards on second down and Chase Francis made the third-down tackle before Gilberto Lorenzana missed a 37-yard field goal at 8:15. The Bulldogs followed with a 13-play, 61-yard drive that included Joshuah Keith's 22-yard completion to Challenger Valentine, a 15-yard throw to Ibrahim Barry and Keith's 11-yard run to the WSSU 9, but a false start and later a sack by Avir Johnson and Nikotis Gordon pushed BSU back before Peter Lipscombe missed from 36 yards at :51. The Rams took over at their 20, but Kialib Felder broke up a deep pass and Francis sacked Jeffries for an 11-yard loss as the first quarter ended scoreless at 0-0.

After the Rams punted to open the second quarter, the Bulldogs put together a ground-driven drive from their own 40, with Joshuah Keith converting third downs on runs of four and 14 yards and Maximus Jones adding a 7-yard rush for another first down. BSU reached the WSSU 18, but a false start and a holding penalty pushed the series back, and Chris Coleman's 27-yard punt went for a touchback at 7:40. WSSU answered with a 16-play possession, converting four third downs and moving as far as the BSU 20 before Alijah Miller dropped a completion for a 1-yard loss and a holding penalty moved the Rams back. Felder broke up a deep pass on second-and-long, and WSSU's 77-yard field goal attempt was no good at :16 as the quarter ended without a score.
