ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia University, St. Paul Director of Athletics Regan McAthie has announced a change in leadership as the University and Head Football Coach Shannon Currier have parted ways.
The University will begin an immediate search for the next leader of Golden Bear football.
"We are grateful for Coach Currier's long and steadfast leadership. He has made a lasting impact on CSP Football and especially on the countless young men who have come through the program," said McAthie.
Currier departs from the University as the football program's all-time wins leader with a record of 56-87 at CSP, leading the Golden Bears for a total of 14 years (13 football seasons).
He became the program's all-time wins leader with a 16-10 win at Southwest Minnesota State on November 3, 2018 in Marshall, Minnesota, a place he served as offensive coordinator in 1997 and 1998 before coming to Concordia for the Golden Bears' first NCAA Division II season in the Northern Sun in 1999 as offensive coordinator under former CSP coach Dan O'Brien.
Currier was named Concordia's eighth head coach the following year in 2000, putting together the best four-year run in CSP football history including a 5-win turnaround season from 1999 (2-8) to 2000 (7-3). A 32-12 overall and 25-9 NSIC record during his first four years culminated with an NSIC Championship in 2003 when he was named NSIC Coach of the Year and led CSP to its first-ever postseason berth in the Mineral Water Bowl.
His first run at CSP was defined by home dominance as Concordia went 18-2 at Griffin Stadium, its former home just blocks from campus at Central High School.
He coached CSP to the most wins during any four-year run in CSP football history, and no other coach in school history has achieved four winning seasons, as Currier did consecutively from 2000 to 2003.
After his four successful seasons at CSP, Currier departed for Truman State (Mo.) where he used his magic to turn a pair of 2-9 seasons into back-to-back winning campaigns for the Bulldogs, who went 6-5 in 2006 and 2007 including a fourth-place 6-3 finish in the MIAA in 2006.
Following his five seasons at Truman State and a hiatus from coaching, Currier returned to the sidelines for the 2016 season at Concordia and was able to reinvigorate the program similarly to the timeline at Truman. Following a pair of 2-9 seasons at CSP in 2016 and 2017, Concordia broke through for a 5-6 season in 2018 and a return to a winning campaign in 2019 with a 6-5 record. During the 2018 and 2019 seasons, CSP was close to even greater heights with three 1-score losses (eight points or less) each year.
As head coach of the Golden Bears, Currier produced a 33-36 career home record and held a 10-3 record in home openers.
Across a 19-year head coaching career at the NCAA Division II level, Currier has produced a 76-122 record.
