For a league that spent all summer being picked apart and re-ranked, Conference Carolinas football finally gets to answer back on the field this week. As usual, we begin the year with crossover season: UNC Pembroke opens at home against Wingate under the lights, a measuring-stick game against SAC competition before conference play even starts, while Barton hits the road to Virginia State looking for any sign that last year's step back was a blip and not a trend. No conference points on the line in either of those, but plenty of tone-setting. Every program in this league insists it's better than last August. This week, we start finding out who's actually telling the truth.

Barton hits the road to Ettrick, Virginia for its 2026 opener against Virginia State, hoping for a turnaround after a 3-8 season in which the Bulldogs managed just 192 points (17.5 per game) while a shorthanded defense surrendered 336 points (30.5 per game) and nearly 4,600 total yards. Almost the entire offensive skill-position corps from that team is gone, leaving senior wideout Jaidan Lee as the most experienced returning weapon after catching 27 passes for 286 yards in a complementary role a year ago — he now steps into a far bigger part of the game plan. On defense, junior back Zy-Hir Williams gives Barton a steady piece in the secondary, having racked up 37 tackles, an interception and a team-high seven pass breakups in 2025, and he'll be leaned on heavily as the Bulldogs try to shore up a unit that struggled to get off the field last fall.
The 2026 season opener for Virginia State is a rematch of last year’s first game against Barton, where the Trojans were victorious by a 25-7 score on the road. VSU enters the 2026 season off a 6-4 finish that saw the Trojans average 27.5 points and 420.6 total yards a game last year. Redshirt sophomore Rahsaan Matthews Jr. returns as the engine of that attack after a dual-threat season in which he threw for 2,361 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding 439 yards and three more scores on the ground, earning him a well-deserved place on the 2026 Watch List for the Black College Football Player of the Year Award. The defense gets its anchor back too in redshirt senior linebacker Mehkhi Johnson, who paced the Trojans with 76 tackles a year ago and returns to lead a unit that held opponents to 24.2 points per game, as Virginia State looks to open the season with a home win over a Barton squad replacing much of its own production.

Wingate carries plenty of momentum — and a mountain of departed production — into its 2026 opener Thursday against UNC Pembroke, having gone 9-3 a year ago and reaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs behind an offense that scored 401 points (36.45 per game) and racked up 4,649 total yards. Much of that firepower is gone, but redshirt junior receiver Xavier Jackson returns after hauling in 25 passes for 505 yards and a touchdown in a complementary role last fall, and he'll be pressed into a featured spot now that Wingate's top rusher, passer and receiver from 2025 have all moved on. The defense, which held opponents to 18.82 points a game a year ago, gets a boost from redshirt sophomore defensive back Ephraim Wright, who returns after totaling 40 tackles and an interception in 2025 and is expected to be one of the more experienced pieces the Bulldogs lean on in the secondary.
Under the lights for Military Appreciation Night at Grace P. Johnson Stadium, UNC Pembroke opens its 2026 season riding an 8-3 finish to the 2025 season built on a balanced attack that produced 348 points and 4,621 total yards a season ago. The Braves have to replace do-it-all quarterback Tre Robinson, but junior receiver Que Kennedy is back after a breakout year — 58 catches, 887 yards and a team-high 11 touchdowns — giving whoever wins the starting job under center at least one proven weapon to lean on. On defense, junior linebacker Jadin Baptist returns as the engine of a group that held opponents to just 18 points per game in 2025, having paced UNCP with 83 tackles, and he'll again be counted on to set the tone up front against a Wingate team replacing plenty of its own production.

Chowan readies itself for a Noon kickoff against West Virginia State, opening 2026 with plenty to prove after a 4-7 finish in which the Hawks scored just 21.55 points a game while their defense bled 32.18 points and 4,260 yards a season ago. Senior wideout Luke Krall gives the passing game a proven target after hauling in 22 catches for 339 yards and a 15.4-yard average per reception in 2025, a group that otherwise loses both quarterbacks and its leading rusher-receiver from a year ago. Chowan's best building block might actually be on defense, where junior back Darryl Harris returns after leading the team in both tackles (70) and sacks (4.0) — a two-level disruptor the Hawks will lean on again as they try to tighten up a unit that surrendered more than 30 points a contest in 2025.
West Virginia State opens the 2026 season at home, looking to clean up a shootout-prone 2025 in which the Yellow Jackets scored 30.45 points a game but gave up even more, finishing 5-6 despite piling up 4,516 total yards of offense. Senior quarterback Kaleb Jackson returns after a big debut season in the program, throwing for 2,287 yards and 17 touchdowns, and he headlines an offense that also brings back leading rusher Jojo Restall (668 yards, six touchdowns). On defense, sophomore linebacker Daesean Jackson gives the Yellow Jackets a pass-rushing spark after leading the team with four sacks as a true freshman, and he'll be counted on early to help a unit that allowed 32.0 points and 4,634 total yards in 2025 tighten things up.

Andrew College hits the road for its 2026 opener against Shorter, carrying momentum from an 8-1 finish in 2025 in which the Fighting Tigers averaged 33.2 points and 420.3 total yards per game while the defense allowed just 17.6 points and 189.7 yards a contest. Sophomore receiver Amari McIntyre returns as a proven big-play option after catching 15 passes for 344 yards and six touchdowns last season — a 22.9-yard average per catch — giving the offense a downfield weapon even after losing its dual-threat quarterback. The secondary gets a lift too from junior safety Kody Sudduth, back after totaling 18 tackles, two interceptions, two pass breakups and a forced fumble in 2025, and he'll help anchor a defense that now has to replace the high-caliber pass rush it lost up front.
Shorter welcomes Andrew College to Rome for its 2026 opener, looking to build off a season that badly needs a bounce-back — the Hawks finished 2-9 in 2025 while averaging just 22.82 points and giving up 29 a game, with the defense surrendering nearly 3,900 total yards. Graduate quarterback Jeb Walls returns as the unquestioned offensive centerpiece after accounting for 1,303 passing yards and nine touchdowns through the air, plus 325 yards and seven more scores on the ground, giving Shorter a level of continuity at the position most rebuilding programs don't have. Junior defensive end Mikey Matos headlines the returning defenders after leading the Hawks with three sacks in 2025, and he'll be counted on for more consistent pressure up front as Shorter tries to fix a unit that allowed opposing quarterbacks to throw for 23 touchdowns a year ago.

There's no sugarcoating a 1-10 season, but Erskine heads to Bluefield, Virginia with a nucleus that's still developing — the Flying Fleet scored just 16.27 points a game in 2025 while their defense gave up 37.09 points and 417 yards a contest, numbers a young roster is hoping to leave behind. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Killmer gives Erskine a foundation to build around after throwing for 1,805 yards and 13 touchdowns as a first-year starter, experience that should pay off for an offense looking to take a step forward. On defense, redshirt sophomore Keaton Cooley returns as the anchor of the back seven after leading the team with 67 tackles in 2025, and he'll be leaned on heavily as Erskine tries to shore up a unit that surrendered better than 400 yards a game a season ago.
Bluefield opens 2026 with a roster that keeps its top offensive weapon even as it replaces the quarterback who got him the ball — sophomore receiver Marlin Haywood is back after catching 35 passes for 582 yards and six touchdowns in 2025, the headline returner for an offense that produced 370.4 yards and 24.9 points a game a year ago. The Rams finished last season 4-6 but gave up a startling 38.4 points and 403.1 yards a contest, numbers that put extra weight on sophomore linebacker Ethan Walker, who returns after leading Bluefield with 4.5 sacks in 2025 and figures to anchor a pass rush that needs to find another gear against an Erskine offense that's rebuilding of its own.

Catawba at Ferrum | Ferrum, Va. | 6:00 PM | STATS | VIDEO
Catawba travels North to open 2026 fresh off one of its better seasons in years — the Indians went 7-4 in 2025 and put up video-game numbers on offense, scoring 394 points and piling up 5,055 total yards, though the 26-touchdown passer who ran that attack is gone. Redshirt senior running back Bennett Galloway softens that blow, returning after punching in 11 touchdowns on just 84 carries for 573 yards a season ago, a short-yardage weapon Catawba will lean on early while a new quarterback settles in. The defense brings back its top tackler, too, in senior linebacker Jaylen Hinton, who racked up 71 stops in 2025 and gives Catawba a steady, experienced presence in the middle as the Indians try to build on a unit that held opponents to 279 points a season ago.
Ferrum is set to begin a new season with its offensive centerpiece back in the fold — junior quarterback Eli Foutz returns after throwing for 1,801 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2025, giving the Panthers a real chance to improve on an offense that managed only 19.55 points and 291.5 yards a game a year ago. That continuity matters given how far Ferrum's defense has to climb — the Panthers surrendered 36.09 points and 410.1 yards a contest in 2025 — and sophomore linebacker Deandre Watson gives them a building block after tying for the team lead with three sacks as a true freshman. Ferrum finished 4-7 last fall, and the return of its starting quarterback alongside a young, ascending pass rusher offers a real reason for optimism heading into the opener.
