The Great American Conference reaches one of its biggest weekends of the season in Week 7, with two undefeated teams meeting in a Top 20 showdown as No. 18 Henderson State travels to No. 2 Harding.
Thursday
East Central (5-1) at Oklahoma Baptist (3-3)
East Central heads to Shawnee for a Thursday night matchup with Oklahoma Baptist, with the Tigers looking to build on their 5-1 start. East Central enters the week with the GAC's second-ranked total offense, averaging 471.3 yards per game, while Oklahoma Baptist is coming off a five-takeaway performance in its 34-20 win over Arkansas-Monticello.
The Tigers are led by quarterback Sergio Kennedy, who has completed 111 of 169 passes for 1,532 yards, 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions this season. Kennedy has also added 445 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. East Central's offense is coming off a 58-point performance against Arkansas Tech, including 420 passing yards from Kennedy and 289 receiving yards from Kaden Jones.
Oklahoma Baptist will look to slow down the Tigers while continuing the momentum from last week's win. Jason Ceniti accounted for 371 yards of total offense against UAM, while Jacob Trimble recorded 125 receiving yards and a 77-yard touchdown. The Bison defense forced five turnovers in the victory and will face another major challenge against East Central's offense.
The Bison lead the Division II-era series 6-4, but East Central won last year's meeting 37-31 in overtime in Ada.
Saturday
Arkansas-Monticello (1-5) at Ouachita Baptist (4-2)
Arkansas-Monticello travels to Arkadelphia looking to pull off a road upset against an Ouachita Baptist team that has won two straight. The Boll Weevils have shown they can move the ball effectively, averaging more than 500 yards of total offense in last week's loss to Oklahoma Baptist. However, turnovers have been a problem, and protecting the football will be key against an Ouachita defense that has shown it can turn takeaways into points.
The Weevils will look to build around their passing attack, led by quarterback Drew Forkner, who threw for 342 yards last week. Running back Dave Alston also provides a threat on the ground after rushing for 96 yards and a touchdown. If Arkansas-Monticello can balance its offense and finish drives without costly mistakes, it could put pressure on the Tigers.
Ouachita, meanwhile, will look to keep its offense rolling behind quarterback Tre Nichols, who has been a major factor both through the air and on the ground. The Tigers have shown the ability to create explosive plays, and maintaining that versatility will be important against a Weevils defense that allowed 514 yards last week. Defensively, limiting Arkansas-Monticello's big plays and forcing difficult third-down situations could help Ouachita control the game.
Southern Nazarene (1-5) at Southwestern Oklahoma State (2-4)
Southern Nazarene travels to Weatherford to face Southwestern Oklahoma State in a matchup between two teams looking to build momentum in the second half of the season. SWOSU enters following a 28-18 win over Southern Arkansas, while the Crimson Storm are looking to rebound from a 49-14 loss to Ouachita Baptist.
The Bulldogs will look to establish their running game after rushing for 243 yards against Southern Arkansas. Charles Mutter led the way with 99 yards, while Duce Hart added a touchdown on the ground. SWOSU's defense also made a difference with a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown from Kelton Moore. Maintaining that ground production and continuing to create turnovers could be key to the Bulldogs' chances.
Southern Nazarene will need to find ways to slow down SWOSU's rushing attack while generating more offense of its own. The Crimson Storm allowed 489 yards against Ouachita Baptist last week, making defensive stops and limiting explosive plays important priorities. Offensively, sustaining drives and converting scoring opportunities will be crucial if SNU hopes to keep the game competitive.
Southeastern Oklahoma State (4-2) at Northwestern Oklahoma State (0-6)
Southeastern Oklahoma State travels to Alva looking to bounce back from a 38-24 loss to Harding. The Savage Storm will face a Northwestern Oklahoma State team still searching for its first win of the season, giving Southeastern an opportunity to get back on track in conference play.
Southeastern averages 327.5 yards of total offense per game, with 140 yards coming on the ground and 187.5 through the air. The Savage Storm will need to establish consistency in both areas while avoiding the offensive struggles that limited them to just 12 rushing yards against Harding. Defensively, Southeastern will also look to continue creating game-changing plays after its defense scored twice in the first half last week.
Northwestern will look to take advantage of its home field and find more consistency offensively. The Rangers totaled 191 yards against Henderson State last week, including 100 rushing yards and 91 passing yards. Northwestern's defense showed it could make plays against the Reddies, forcing and recovering two fumbles in the first half. Creating turnovers and keeping Southeastern from building an early lead will be important as the Rangers pursue their first win.
Southern Arkansas (2-4) at Arkansas Tech (2-4)
Southern Arkansas travels to Russellville to face Arkansas Tech in a matchup between two teams looking to get back on track after narrow losses last week. The Muleriders fell 28-18 to Southwestern Oklahoma State, while the Wonder Boys came up just short in a 58-56 shootout against East Central. Both offenses have shown they can produce, making defensive stops and finishing drives important factors in Saturday's matchup.
Arkansas Tech will look to build on a dominant performance on the ground after rushing for 361 yards against East Central. Tracy Daniels led the way with 175 rushing yards and four touchdowns, while Kollin Robinson added 104 yards on the ground. Continuing to control the line of scrimmage and take advantage of its rushing attack will be key for the Wonder Boys, who will also need to make critical stops after allowing 58 points last week.
Southern Arkansas will look to counter with its own ground game, which has been a consistent part of its offensive approach. The Muleriders rushed for 188 yards against SWOSU, with Drew Davis contributing 91 yards on the ground. However, turnovers proved costly late in that game, including an interception returned for a touchdown and a fumble. Protecting the football and sustaining drives will be important against an Arkansas Tech defense looking to turn its season around.
Henderson State (6-0) at Harding (6-0)
The Great American Conference's biggest matchup of the week features two undefeated teams as No. 18 Henderson State travels to Searcy to face No. 2 Harding. Both teams enter at 6-0, with Saturday's showdown offering a major test for two of the conference's top contenders. Henderson State is coming off a 34-7 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State, while Harding defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State 38-24.
Henderson State will face a major challenge against Harding's dominant rushing attack, which averages more than 400 yards per game on the ground. The Reddies will need to win at the line of scrimmage, limit explosive runs and force Harding into passing situations to keep the Bisons from controlling the clock. Henderson's defense has allowed just 16.8 points per game this season, and maintaining that level of production will be critical against Harding's physical offense.
On the other side, Henderson State brings a balanced offense that averages more than 500 yards per game, giving it multiple ways to challenge the Harding defense. The Reddies will need to sustain drives and capitalize on scoring opportunities while avoiding turnovers that could give the Bisons extra possessions. Harding has been effective at limiting opposing offenses and controlling possession, so Henderson's ability to make the most of its opportunities could prove decisive.
