GSC Loses AQ Status For D2 Football Championship

The Gulf South Conference has lost automatic qualification status for the NCAA Division II football championship, beginning in the fall of 2026. NCAA rules stipulate that a conference must have a minimum of eight participating members to be granted automatic qualification to the post season tournament. With West Florida's declared intent to reclassify to Division I, the GSC football membership will include just three institutions for the upcoming season.

With 2025 being the first year of automatic qualification in Division II football, the GSC was granted waiver to allow its champion to receive an automatic bid. Valdosta State earned the bid by winning all three GSC contests. The Blazers completed the regular season with an overall record of 6-4 and lost a road contest at Albany State in the first round of the playoffs.

Earlier this month at a meeting of the NCAA Division II Championships Committee, the GSC's request for a continuation of the waiver was denied. In it's formal report from the meeting, the committee stated the following:

The Division II Football Committee considered the request previously during its annual meeting, which was before the West Florida announcement, and did not support extending the waiver for 2026. While understanding the conference's circumstances, the Championships Committee was not supportive of granting an exception for a conference that will only have half the members required for an AQ and thus voted to deny the request.

The surviving members of the GSC will continue to have access to the post-season, but without the security of an automatic bid. Delta State, Valdosta State and West Alabama will be eligible to qualify for at-large bids. Super Region Two will have only three automatic qualifiers from the SAC, SIAC and Conference Carolinas, leaving five bids open for at-large participants.

Where the Gulf South Conference goes from here remains in flux and it is not a given that it can continue to sponsor football. Overall, the GSC has a roster of 12 full member institutions and there have been recent additions. However, none have included football.  Rebuilding the football membership to meet AQ status would mean adding a minimum of five institutions. Excluding the short term arrangements involving Chowan and Erskine, there have been no additions to the GSC football membership since 2018, meaning the rapid growth that would be necessary is unlikley.
