2021 GSC – Round Two Preview

West Georgia vs Valdosta State

This week’s second round matchup is the 14th all-time meeting between West Georgia and Valdosta State, with Valdosta winning eight of those contests.  The last time these two teams met, Valdosta escaped at home with a 36-34 victory.  However, the previous two times these teams have met in the playoffs, West Georgia has been victorious.  Last week, West Georgia used a stellar defensive performance to defeat a very good Albany State team on the road.  The Wolves’ defense allowed 287 yards and added a scoop and score to the party.  Valdosta State earned the round one bye after falling to West Florida, 61-42 during the last week of the regular season.  As we look at the numbers of both teams throughout the season, one thing is apparent:  you can toss the numbers and records out the window! They all mean nothing in a win-or-go-home scenario as both teams are vying to move onto the quarterfinals.  It is no surprise that either team is here, both programs have tremendous athletes and coaching staffs.  It is always hard to beat a team two times in the same season; however, Valdosta State had the highly coveted first round bye.  The bye is huge this time of year as it gives teams the ability to rest guys, get treatment and recover while also recharging after a grueling Gulf South schedule.  The extra week of rest and preparation could be the difference maker in the outcome of this matchup between two GSC powerhouses. This game will live up to the hype!

Prediction: Valdosta State
