GSC/Conference Carolinas Week Nine Preview & Picks

As the calendar brings an end to October, the stakes rise across Conference Carolinas and the Gulf South Conference. Saturday’s slate features two key games with plenty on the line. In Conference Carolinas play, Ferrum hosts Chowan at W.B. Adams Stadium on Homecoming Weekend. Both teams are 3-1 in the league, trailing UNC Pembroke and North Greenville at 4-1, and a win will keep the winner in the title hunt while putting the loser’s postseason hopes in jeopardy. In the Gulf South Conference, a pair of regional powers collide as West Alabama (5-3, 0-1) welcomes No. 13 Valdosta State (5-1) to Livingston for the Blazers’ conference opener.

Shorter went to Valdosta State and led the 13th-ranked Blazers 24-21 at halftime before falling 41-31, its fourth straight loss. The Hawks jumped out to a 17-14 lead on a fumble return touchdown, and Devin Edmonds threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Kyree Jenkins, who caught three passes for 77 yards. But Valdosta State pulled away in the second half behind 273 rushing yards, and Edmonds threw five interceptions. *Chowan (4-4, 3-1 CC) at Ferrum (3-5, 3-1 CC) | Ferrum, Va. | 2:00 PM | STATS | VIDEO

Chowan’s run at an unbeaten league record ended in a 38-21 loss at UNC Pembroke, though the Hawks were within 17-14 at halftime. Tayshawn Benson had two sacks and four tackles for loss, and Darian Whitaker led the team with 10 tackles. At 4-4 overall and 3-1 in Conference Carolinas play, Chowan is averaging 25.1 points and 344.6 yards per game while allowing 24.6 points. The offense is almost entirely a passing attack, since the Hawks have netted just 62.3 rushing yards per game, but Adkins has thrown for 2,249 yards and 18 touchdowns with three interceptions; Amir Alexander has 46 catches for 802 yards and seven touchdowns, and Randolph has 31 catches for 564 yards. The Hawks have scored on 23 of 28 red-zone trips, and kicker Riley Swanson has made six field goals. Ferrum is 0-4 at W.B. Adams Stadium this season, but it gets a chance to change that Saturday, where a win would keep the team in the hunt for the Conference Carolinas title game and could knock Chowan out of contention for the Conference Carolinas Bowl.

Prediction: Ferrum

^No. 13 Valdosta State (5-1, 0-0 GSC) at West Alabama (5-3, 0-1 GSC) | Livingston, Ala. | 2:00 PM | STATS | VIDEO

Kendrick Joseph returned two kickoffs 97 yards for touchdowns, and he finished with six returns for 327 yards, a 54.5-yard average, which earned him D2Football.com National Special Teams Player of the Week honors. But the Tigers managed just 237 yards of offense, including 64 on the ground, and Joseph Harper’s 12 tackles and two sacks weren’t enough to stop Delta State’s 274 rushing yards. The loss was West Alabama’s second straight, dropping it to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in the GSC. The Tigers are averaging 22.6 points and 309.1 yards per game while allowing 24.3 points.
