Javelinas outlast Wolves in wild shootout

Monmouth, OR - Levi Fotenot powered his way into the endzone for what would be the game-winning touchdown of a wild, 58-51, win for Texas A&M-Kingsville against Western Oregon Saturday from McArthur Field.

The Javelinas (4-2, 4-0 LSC) got the ball with 4:33 left to go in the fourth quarter and drove 71 yards to retake the lead late enough in the ball game that the Wolves (2-4, 0-4 LSC) were not able to respond. The Javelinas advance to 4-0 in Lone Star Conference play for the first time since the 2023 season and have now won three straight contests in Monmouth.

Offense was the name of the game for both teams, as the Javelinas and Wolves combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense and scored 109 points. The Javelina defense however made the necessary splash plays in order to win, racking up four sacks and two turnovers.

Receiver Christian Kretz had another ridiculous performance, snagging 16 balls for 291 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 75-yard touchdown to answer a long touchdown run by the Wolves, while quarterback Mills Dawson had his finest game as a Javelinas, throwing for 408 yards and three touchdowns while adding two more touchdowns on the ground. Nate Barnett also had an excellent game with seven catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Despite the historic offensive performance, the Wolves kept responding every time the Javelinas would get out to a small lead. A four-yard rushing touchdown by the Wolves in the fourth quarter would put them back up by seven, but the Javelinas instantly responded after Dawson found Barnett for a seven-yard touchdown to even up the game at 51. The defense then got the stop they needed after a Taiwo Atunrase sack put the Wolves in a punt situation, giving the Javelinas the opportunity to go back up late in the ball game.

The defense needed one more stop however to seal the win, and Travis Bielefeld brought the pressure the Javelinas needed. Bielefeld recorded 1.5 sacks on the Wolves' final drive with his final sack putting WOU in a fourth and 12 situation that they would not convert, sealing the win for the Javelinas.
