MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville University Director of Athletics Kate Corcoran has announced Drew Folmar '01 as the football program's new head coach.
Folmar, a legendary quarterback at the 'Ville from 1997-2000 and a Millersville Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, has spent the last 25 years as a high-level collegiate coach, developing record-setting offenses and award-winning student athletes. He served as the offensive coordinator for three Division I FCS programs over the last 12 years, helping those teams to four NCAA playoff appearances.
"We are excited to welcome Coach Folmar back to lead the Millersville University football program," said Corcoran. "His understanding of Marauder Pride, his history with the Millersville football program, long history of developing strong student-athletes and being a part of winning programs made him the right candidate for the role. This is home for Coach Folmar. The connections he has in the area will aid in recruiting student-athletes to the University and restore our program to the success it experienced when Drew was the quarterback."
A return to the Black and Gold is a dream come true for Folmar. He played under College Football Hall of Fame coach Dr. Gene A. Carpenter, winning 30 games as a four-year starter, captaining Millersville to the NCAA Playoffs in 1999 and going 20-4 against the PSAC East. He set and still holds 17 school records.
"It is an incredible honor to return to Millersville as the head football coach," said Folmar. "The opportunity to come home and lead my alma mater is something very few coaches experience. This has been a dream of mine since I graduated, and I'm grateful to make it a reality."
As a coach, Folmar has recruited and developed 78 all-conference selections and three conference offensive athletes of the year. He most recently served as the offensive coordinator at Bucknell after eight seasons and three NCAA Playoff appearances at Elon, working alongside Curt Cignetti for two of those seasons. There, Folmar progressed to the role of associate head coach. Folmar led Lehigh's offense from 2014-16, guiding the program to a Patriot League Championship with the conference's top offense. Before leaping to the Division I level, Folmar helped establish Kutztown as a power in the PSAC. He coordinated the offense from 2009-2012, coaching 17 All-PSAC East performers and a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist while winning the 2011 PSAC Championship and reaching back-to-back NCAA Playoff appearances. He served the 2013 season as head coach.
Folmar's knack for developing quarterbacks and successful offenses is well-established. At every stop as a coordinator, he worked with a school record-setting quarterback. Three of his players won conference rookie of the year awards. He also had a hand in rebuilding programs. Kutztown set a school record for wins and won its first-ever conference championship. Elon produced a 17-51 record before he joined the program, and in seven fall seasons with Folmar on staff, Elon went 37-18. A native of Chambersburg, Pa., Folmar has deep-rooted recruiting connections in the all-important Southeastern Pennsylvania region. He led his team's recruiting efforts in the region for the vast majority of his 25-year coaching career.
"Restoring the program will take hard work, energy, and a strong commitment from everyone involved," said Folmar. "We will build a dedicated staff, re-engage our current roster, and recruit student-athletes who understand what it means to be a Marauder. Our program will be about more than just football. We will develop young men who do things the right way, take pride in academics, and represent Millersville with integrity. We will be active on campus, engaged in the community, connected with our alumni, and committed to competing for championships."
Folmar worked his way through the coaching ranks, beginning as a student assistant quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Millersville. He held the same position at the United States Merchant Marine Academy before coaching wide receivers at Millersville from 2003-2008. His first stop as a coordinator was at New Haven in 2008. He has coached every level from high school to Division I and held every role within a program from academics, video, travel, recruiting and strength and conditioning. Those experiences prepared him to be the 24th coach in Millersville football's 136 years as a program.
"My family and I are excited to return to a place we call home," said Folmar. "We appreciate the support of the Millersville community and our alumni, and we look forward to working together to revitalize Marauder Pride while building a program that makes everyone proud."
Folmar will formally be introduced at a press conference on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 12 p.m. The press conference will be broadcast on the PSAC Network.
