No. 1 Bulldogs Win Anchor-Bone Classic

No. 1 Ferris State won the Anchor-Bone Classic over rival Grand Valley State, 41-34. The win extended the Bulldogs' active winning streak to 37 games, including three in a row over GVSU.

The Lakers took advantage of two first quarter fumbles by the Bulldogs to build an early 17-0 lead. Ferris State would then go on to score the next 34 points. The Lakers would claw their way back into it late in the game, but the Bulldogs controlled most of the action for the last three quarters. The Bulldogs rushed for 286, led by Wyatt Bower's 153. Bower also scored three rushing touchdowns and threw a TD pass to Tae Boyd.

The Lakers remain perfect at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC. Grand Valley State falls to 5-2 and 1-2. A full recap will follow later tonight.

Ferris State post game story

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nation's top-ranked Ferris State University Bulldogs rallied from a 17-point first period deficit to notch a 41-34 win over archival and 13th-ranked Grand Valley State before a sellout crowd of more than 16,000 fans on Saturday (Oct. 17) at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale.

The Bulldogs overcame two early turnovers and racked up more than 400 yards of total offense en route to the win, which stretched FSU's nation-leading winning streak to 37 consecutive games.

With the win, Ferris State held onto a share of first-place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings, moving to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in league action. FSU also held onto the Anchor-Bone Trophy, which is now presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, for the third year in a row.

"It's a huge, huge win," said FSU head coach Tony Annese. "Obviously, it's not about the trophy, but just to beat a great opponent and stay undefeated in the GLIAC.

"Grand Valley played really hard," he added. "Give credit to their coaching staff and their kids. Obviously, they put us on our heels right away to start the game. But credit to our guys. They showed incredible grit and incredible belief. It's just unbelievable the way our guys are. They never think, 'Oh gosh, we could be in trouble.' It's just unbelievable."

The Bulldogs erased a 17-0 deficit by scoring 34 unanswered points across six scoring drives from the second through third quarters. The running game produced 286 yards and four touchdowns, while the defense recorded three sacks and forced two turnovers as the Bulldogs finished with 10 points off takeaways.

In the opening stanza, the Lakers outscored the Bulldogs 17-0 in the first quarter, turning two Bulldogs lost fumbles into 14 points while converting three of four third downs. The Lakers gained 87 rushing yards and threw for two touchdowns, while the Bulldogs ran for 56 yards, completed both pass attempts for 19 yards and kept a late drive alive with a fourth-and-1 conversion at the Lakers 36.

The Bulldogs outscored the Lakers 20-0 in the second quarter, however, using two rushing touchdowns and two field goals to take a 20-17 lead into halftime. FSU ran for 81 yards in the quarter and converted both red-zone trips into points, while the defense held the Lakers without a first down, forced two turnovers and limited the home team to 0-for-3 on third down.
