Pittsburg State and West Alabama have scheduled a home-and-home series for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. The 2026 contest will take place on Saturday,Sept. 12 on the campus of the University of West Alabama. Pittsburg State will host the 2027 meeting on Saturday, Sept. 11.
For the Gorillas, this is the latest in a line of aggressive scheduling moves made possible by the MIAA's elimination of the 11-game schedule. Pitt State faced off with Ferris State in 2024 and 2025 and are set to open the 2026 season against the Bulldogs. The Gorillas also hosted Grand Valley State earlier this season. "We are excited for this opportunity to play a high-quality program like West Alabama in the non-conference portion of our schedule for the next two seasons," Pitt State Vice President for Athletics Jim Johnson said. "This series will showcase two great programs from the MIAA and the Gulf South Conference. Working ahead on future schedules is so vital in today's landscape, so we're thankful to be able to address the open date we had in our schedules for 2026 and 2027."
For West Alabama, the opportunity to bolster their schedule with a quality opponent as the Gulf South Conference numbers continue to dwindle, was too good to pass up. "We're excited to announce this home-and-home football series with Pittsburg State, one of the premier programs in Division II football," said UWA Director of Athletics Brett Gilliland. "We both have great traditions of excellence and competitiveness on the field, and this match-up will showcase two programs that take great pride in doing things the right way. Our fans can look forward to an outstanding atmosphere and a high level of competition when these two teams meet."
