Seton Hill continued PSAC West action as they traveled to California, PA for a matchup with the sixth ranked Vulcans on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins outscored the Vulcans 10-0 in the fourth quarter of action as they rallied to upset the #6 Vulcans by the score of 16-7. SHU is now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the west while CalU drops to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the west. The victory over the Vulcans is the first victory over CalU in program history.
On the opening kickoff, Demetri Whitehead recovered a fumble to give SHU the ball at their own 31 yard line. The Griffins marched to the CalU five yard line but had a 22 yard field goal blocked. The teams then exchanged punts before Darius Patterson intercepted a pass and returned it to the Griffin 33 yard line late in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Griffins used a 12 play, 48 yard drive for the first score of the contest. Darrian Carter scored from one yard out to give SHU a 6-0 lead with three minutes left in the half. SHU forced another CalU punt but a fumble on their first play after the punt gave the Vulcans excellent field position late in the half. The Vulcans took advantage with a 16 yard touchdown pass to take a 7-6 lead into the halftime break.
Each team punted on both of their third quarter possessions as the Vulcans continued to lead 7-6 after three quarters of action.
Seton Hill held the ball into the fourth quarter and capped a 15 play, 56 yard drive with a 32 yard Rayyan Bataineh field goal with 8:49 to play in the contest as the Griffins took a 9-7 lead. CalU drove to the Griffin 30 yard line but an incomplete pass on fourth down turned the ball over to the Griffins with 4:55 left. Facing a third and 18 from their own 22 yard line, Carter scampered for 30 yards and a first down. After a Griffin timeout, Ky'Ron Craggette ran for a 48 yard touchdown untouched on the next play as the Griffins extended the lead to 16-7 with 2:22 to play. Ben Weaver then got a strip sack with the Vulcans driving with less than a minute to play and the Griffins recovered. The Griffins then took two kneel downs to run out the clock.
The Griffins ran for 238 yards to just 112 for the Vulcans. SHU finished with 309 yards of offense to 287 for the Vulcans.
Craggette rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown. Carter added 97 yards rushing and a touchdown. Thomas Johnson led the defense with 10 tackles.
SHU will host Slippery Rock next Saturday in a PSAC West contest.
