On Monday, November 10, Coach Mark "Mac" Maciejewski announced his plans to retire as head coach of football at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
Maciejewski '92/'96M spent 15 years as head football coach at Shippensburg University with the 2025 season marking his 32nd year overall with his alma mater. He is currently the longest-tenured head football coach in the PSAC.
A two-time AFCA Division II Region 1 Coach of the Year, Maciejewski has guided SU Football to an 85-61 record in 13 seasons of competition. He is second all-time on Shippensburg's coaching wins list.
"It has been a complete honor to have spent 32 years of my life in the Shippensburg University Football Family. I take a great deal of pride from my experiences as a player and coach – it has been a truly remarkable journey that has spanned five decades. Stepping away from something this special is not a decision that you make overnight. It requires a tremendous amount of thought. But I have come to the realization that I am ready to start the next chapter of my life with my family. I am looking forward to what the future holds. I could not have done any of this without my wife Tricia – the foundation of my life. She took care of our family when I was pursuing my dream of being the best football coach that I could be. I may be stepping down as the head coach, but my heart will always be with this football family. It will always have my support. And my football home will forever be at Seth Grove Stadium," said Maciejewski.
Maciejewski is the only coach in school history with six or more consecutive winning seasons. Shippensburg's streak of consecutive winning seasons to begin Maciejewski's tenure (2011-18) equaled the school record of eight that was originally set from 1950-57 under coaches Vinton Rambo (1950-54) and Jack Roddick (1955-57). His teams have re-written more than 200 school records during his tenure.
Following the 2017 season, Maciejewski was named the AFCA Division II Region 1 Coach of the Year and PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year after guiding Shippensburg to a 10-2 record. The team made its sixth NCAA postseason appearance in school history, hosting an opening-round game at Seth Grove Stadium, and posted its fifth 10-win season in school history.
In 2012, Maciejewski was named the AFCA Division II Region 1 Coach of the Year and PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year while being selected as one of five finalists for Liberty Mutual's Division II Coach of the Year award. Maciejewski guided SU to an 11-2 record and the second round of the NCAA playoffs.
Maciejewski began his coaching career as an SU graduate assistant in 1995 and 1996. After stints at James Madison and Saint Francis, he returned to coach the SU secondary from 2000-02 before serving as the defensive coordinator from 2003-04. From 2006-10, Maciejewski was named Shippensburg's assistant head coach and was once again charged with leading the secondary.
As an SU Athletics Hall of Fame defensive lineman from 1989-92, Maciejewski was one of the most intimidating players in football history and is one of just three players in program history to receive All-PSAC First Team honors in three consecutive seasons at the same position. Both his bachelor's and master's degrees are in environmental science. Maciejewski finished his playing career with 23 sacks and 28 tackles for loss as a nose guard. He earned Weekly Football Gazette and AP All-America Third Team honors in 1991 and 1992; the 1991 team advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championships.
A native of Punxsutawney, Maciejewski and his wife Tricia currently live in Shippensburg and are the proud parents of their two sons: Brady and the late Levi Maciejewski.
"We are profoundly grateful to Coach Mac for his many years of loyal and dedicated service to Raider Football, both as a student-athlete and as a coach. His leadership, integrity, and commitment have left an enduring mark on our program and the countless student-athletes he has mentored. The success and tradition of Raider Football stand as a testament to his impact. As we look toward the next chapter in the program's proud history, we remain steadfast in our commitment to honoring that legacy while advancing a strong and successful future for our student-athletes and the Raider Football family," said Dr. Charles E. Patterson, president of Shippensburg University.
A nation-wide search for the head football coach position will begin immediately.
"The name Mark Maciejewski will always be connected to Shippensburg athletics. He has created a football legacy over the past 30 years as a player, assistant, and now currently as the longest-tenured head coach in the PSAC. His influence stretches far beyond success on the field and includes daily interactions, life lessons, and impact on students whom he guided to exceed expectations far beyond the turf at Seth Grove Stadium. I am grateful for Mac's contributions. He has set a high standard that we are tasked with continuing by identifying a candidate who can further develop student-athletes to help them achieve success on the field and beyond. We will conduct an aggressive national search to find our next head coach who will continue to develop a program of which Mac and all of us will be proud," said Jeff Michaels, director of Athletics.
