Week 7 Matchups (SIAC teams denoted in bold)
Tuskegee (2-4, 1-3) at Albany State (5-1, 4-0)
The Golden Tigers are coming off of a bye on the heels of a heart-breaking loss to Morehouse. Will freshman Bryson McGrew get his second straight start at quarterback for Tuskegee or will they turn back to the veteran Raequon Beal?
Albany State was very dominant defensively against Clark-Atlanta last week. They held a solid CA squad to only seven points and 234 total yards of offense. On the offensive side of the ball, running backs Aljhanod Thomas and Tiant Wyche both eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the Golden Rams. Quarterback Jaydon Kinney was able to touch paydirt with both his feet and through the air.
I picked these two teams to finish first and second this year. I thought this was going to be the “Golden” matchup of the season. The Golden Rams have played their part while the Golden Tigers have struggled with some close losses. Can Albany State stay undefeated in SIAC play heading into a showdown of first place teams against Benedict next week?
PREDICTION
Albany State 30 Tuskegee 17
Lane (0-6, 0-4) at Morehouse (2-4, 2-2)
The Dragons couldn’t quite get off the shneid last week when they played Miles to a 23-13 game. Nick Billoups continues to be consistent at the quarterback position as he completed 13 of 21 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw one interception and took four sacks. Defensively Lane showed improvement holding Miles to under 100 yards rushing and only 15 first downs.
The Maroon Tigers are continuing to show improvement under former NFL great Terrance Mathis. Morehouse has now won two-in-a-row with a hard-fought victory over Central State. In front of a lively crowd of nearly 7,000 fans, the Maroon Tigers were able to get an early 17-0 lead and never relinquished on the way to a 31-26 win. Quarterback Miles Scott came back down to earth a little bit this week as he threw two interceptions to only one touchdown. Nicholas Woodford was able to pick up the slack for the Maroon Tigers offense as he pounded out 95 yards on 24 carries and also broke the pylon once. Defensively, Morehouse created negative plays combining for eight tackles-for-loss and four sacks.
Morehouse will look to keep their two-game winning streak going as they head back home to Atlanta. Can Lane do anything to stop it?
PREDICTION
Morehouse 38 Lane 16
Kentucky Christian (2-3, 1-1) at Central State (2-5, 2-4)
Kentucky Christian enters this game coming off of a tough loss to Reinhardt 38-35. KCU plays at the NAIA level. The Knights give up 367 yards per game while averaging 399.8 yards per contest. As an offense they do most of their damage through the air while defensively they allow over 200 yards rushing per contest.
The Maraudrs are really playing some good ball in the middle of the season as they nearly got to .500 in league play, falling just short 31-26 to Morehouse. Qeanu-Campbell-Caldwell continues to be the steady hand at quarterback, throwing for 156 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Defensively, CSU created three turnovers last week.
Central State played in front of one of their biggest crowds in a long-time last week as nearly 7,000 fans came out for their game against Morehouse. Can they maintain the excitement level around the program and produce a nice home win this week?
PREDICTION
Central State 37 Kentucky Christian 21
Savannah State (2-2, 3-3) vs Fort Valley State (1-5, 1-3) (Game site Augusta, Ga)
Savannah State got back in the win column with a hard-fought victory over Allen. The Tigers have been flip-flopping quarterbacks with Christian Burks and Fabian Walker. Walker got the majority of the action this past week as he completed 11 of 26 passes for 192 yards and an interception. The offense was led by running back Joseph Hampton who carried it 11 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns, David Gardner Jr. also pumped out 44 yards on 14 carries. The Tigers defense picked off Allen quarterback Jamir Dismukes on three different occasions to stop some key drives and preserve a 23-20 victory.
When I say Fort Valley State is the best 1-5 team in all of Division II football, I mean it. I feel for this team as they have been on the losing end of so many close games this year. Their five losses this year have come by scores of 27-17, 26-21, 21-16, 18-14 and 14-7. They have either led or been tied in the third quarter of every game. FVSU is a good football team that just has to find a way to finish games. They have been on a quarterback carousel this season using Saadiq Teel, Jai’que Hart and Don Hudson. Against Benedict last week, Hudson got the bulk of the snaps behind center, completing 8 of 19 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, The Wildcats were outstanding once again, holding the first place SIAC Benedict Tigers to a feeble 169 yards of total offense.
Both of these Georgia teams will be heading north to Augusta for the “Good Trouble Heritage Classic.” Who will come out victorious?
PREDICTION
Fort Valley State 16 Savannah State 10
Clark-Atlanta (2-4, 1-3) at Miles (1-6, 1-3)
The Golden Bears got their first victory of the season with a 23-13 victory over Lane. Brinley Vandiver was chosen for SIAC offensive player of the week after he completed 19 of 27 pass attempts for 257 yards to go along with two touchdowns. Vandiver, who took over for the incumbent Kam Ivory has really started to find his rhythm behind center. Marquez Mobley helped out his quarterback, hauling in eight passes for 102 yards and a touch. Defensively, Miles played their best game of the season, creating 12 negative plays against the Dragons offense. The Golden Bears defense combined for eight tackles-for-loss and four sacks.
After starting the season 2-1, the Panthers have dropped three straight games. The last two by 35 and 25, respectively. Those two opponents, Benedict and Albany State do sit atop the SIAC standings. Clark-Atlanta is looking to get back on track this week and the quarterback remains a question mark. Will the Panthers go with Xzavier Jackson, who started last week or Zy McDonald who has been the starter for most of the season. Defensively, CA has given up an average of 43 points per game over their last three contests. That number will need to drop dramatically if they want to re-enter the win column.
One team is reeling while the other finally got its first win of the season. Can Clark-Atlanta turn it around or will the Golden Bears string together two wins in-a-row?
PREDICTION
Miles 24 Clark-Atlanta 23
Benedict (6-0, 5-0) at Edward Waters (4-2, 3-1)
Benedict remained as the only unbeaten SIAC team last week after escaping against Fort Valley State with a 14-7 victory. The Tigers offense only managed 169 total yards of offense a week ago. The offense showed improvement after the first two weeks when Darius Ocean overtook Jackson Jensen as the starting quarterback, but two sub-par performances have the undefeated Tigers looking for answers on that side of the ball. Benedict was outstanding again on defense holding their opponent to just seven points on 221 yards of offense.
Edward Waters had a tough loss last week against the red-hot Kentucky State Thorobreds. That was the Tigers first loss in SIAC play. They were tied at one point in the contest with a score of 14-14. KSU then scored 28 unanswered points to pull away from EWU. Noah Bodden was solid last week for the Tigers but not his usual dominant self. He completed 19 of 37 passes for 221 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Maybe a bigger dose of Jhontarrious Thomas this week could help as he broke the pylon twice on nine carries for 44 yards last week. Defensively, Edward Waters only created four negative plays against the KSU offense.
Benedict has EWU this week and Albany State lurking next week. Can they keep themselves in the driver’s seat for the SIAC title or will Edward Waters show they still want a piece of the conference crown?
PREDICTION
Edward Waters 24 Benedict 20
Kentucky State (5-2, 5-1) at Franklin Pierce (3-3, 2-2)
The Thorobreds get a break from conference play as they have just reeled off four straight SIAC wins. None bigger than last week as they won going away against previous conference leader Edward Waters. Two players really stood out offensively for KSU as running back Chad Elzy carried the ball 15 times for 154 yards and three touchdowns. Jon McCall hauled in five passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. That’s an astounding 32.4 yards per grab. KSU was excellent against the run last week, holding EWU to only 71 yards rushing.
Franklin Pierce hosts this contest against Kentucky State and are also a NCAA Division II school. FPU competes in the Northeast-10 conference. The Ravens are a balanced team that averages 134 yards on the ground and 201 yards through the air. They average 22.3 points per game while giving up right at 20 points per contest.
Can the Thorobreds hop out of conference and keep their momentum going?
PREDICTION
Kentucky State 27 Franklin Pierce 20
