SIAC Playoff Matchup-Round Three (SIAC team denoted in bold)
Newberry (11-1, 8-1) at Albany State (12-1, 9-0)
The Wolves from Newberry won a tightly contested hard fought battle over West Florida. Newberry traveled south to Florida to play the Argonauts in the second round of the division II playoffs. Newberry finished the game with -32 yards rushing. It’s hard to imagine winning a game where a team finished that poorly in the run game. Quarterback Reed Charpia was the difference as he passed for 416 yards and two touchdowns to help lead the Wolves to victory. Defensively, Newberry yielded 427 yards of offense to the Argonauts, but they came up with a critical fourth down stop with under two minutes in the game to stop UWF’s drive at their 36 yard-line. The Wolves were outgained by 43 yards and gave up three more first downs than they attained, but successful situational football and a propensity to win close games has Newberry in the quarterfinals of the Division II football playoffs. Newberry moves to 7-0 in one score games on the season.
Albany State pulled off the trifecta Saturday in defeating conference foe Benedict for the third time in 2025. Each game finished closer than the last, but the Golden Rams find themselves in the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs. Albany State nearly doubled Benedict in total yards, outgaining them 336-186 yards. Isaiah Knowles played another good game against a feisty defense, throwing for 244 yards and one touchdown. However, Benedict did sack Knowles six times. Tiant Wyche and Roderick McCrary both saw 13 carries each and combined for 75 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Albany State stifled the Tigers passing game. Starter Darius Ocean passed for seven yards while completing just 2 of 15 pass attempts. Jackson Jensen relieved Ocean but did not fair much better as he finished 6 of 12 for 39 yards. The Golden Rams did give up 140 yards on the ground and one rushing touchdown but still showcased another dominant performance on the defensive side of the football.
Albany State is the last team standing from the SIAC and are now one of the final eight teams left in Division II football. Can they takedown the one loss and red-hot Newberry Wolves and win Super Region II or will their magical season end at home on Saturday?
