Week 8 matchups (SIAC teams denoted in bold)

Edward Waters (4-3, 3-2) at Clark-Atlanta (2-5, 1-0)

Edward Waters is coming off of a hard-fought heart-breaking loss to the first place SIAC Benedict Tigers. EWU has been a team that has relied on its passing attack offensively, but against Benedict, EWU’s Jhontarrius Thomas ran the ball 20 times for a staggering 243 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Edward Waters was able to manage two sacks, three tackles-for-loss and recover a fumble against Benedict. Unfortunately for EWU, a 16 yd touchdown pass for Benedict with only 29 seconds remaining sealed their fate in a tough 31-27 loss.

The Panthers played a good first half against Miles and took a 20 -14 lead into the half last week. But C-A was shut out in the second half and fell 27-20. The Panthers did most of their damage from the air where Xzavier Jackson had a stellar day while completing 27 of his 39 passes for 288 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Dwayne Blanden led the defense with ten tackles and two pass breakups.

Both of these teams are on losing streaks. Which one can get it to end this week?

PREDICTION

Edward Waters 31 Clark-Atlanta 21

Miles (2-6, 2-3) at Central State (2-6, 2-4)

The Golden Bears played in front of a raucous crowd of 11,518 last week for homecoming. Miles was very balanced offensively as they passed for 158 yards and rushed for 157. Defensively, they were also very balanced as seven different guys registered at least four tackles. The Golden Bears also forced three fumbles while recovering two of them.

The Marauders stepped outside of conference play last week against Kentucky Christian of the NAIA. Unfortunately, Central State was down 28-0 midway through the second quarter. Central State did pick up their execution and fought back before falling 35-27. Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell did have his biggest passing day of the season throwing for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Dominique Davis was solid again as usual. He led the Marauders defense with nine tackles, one for a loss, one sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Central State is the loser of two close ones in a row while Miles is the winner of two close ones in a row. Can Miles keep their winning streak alive as they travel to Ohio this week?

PREDICTION

Central State 20 Miles 13

Albany State (6-1, 5-0) at Benedict (7-0, 6-0)

Albany State escaped against Tuskegee last week in a defensive battle, winning 7-3. Tiant Wyche scored the only touchdown of the game, while running for 94 yards on 18 carries. His backfield mate Thomas Aljnahod helped out as well, tallying 73 yards on 12 carries. The Golden Rams offense has just not been the same since Isaiah Knowles has been out. Zhay’Lyn Bell took over for an ineffective Jaydon Kinney, but Bell finished 10 of 21 for only 68 yards. Defensively, ASU was fantastic, holding Tuskegee quarterback Bryson McGrew to 8 of 36 passing for 73 yards and an interception.

The Tigers of Benedict continue to find ways to win and they did so again last week with a 16- yard Darius Ocean touchdown pass with only 29 seconds remaining to defeat a very good Edward Waters team. It was a total team effort offensively as the offense put up 442 yards of total offense with both the passing game and running game being effective. Benedict’s defense did a great job against Noah Bodden and the EWU passing attack, but the Tigers were gashed against the run, giving up 269 yards and a whopping 8.7 yards per carry.

This is undoubtedly the matchup of the year, and could very likely determine who will be the SIAC champions. Both teams put their undefeated conference record on the line in this one.

PREDICTION

Benedict 17 Albany State 13

Morehouse (3-4, 3-2) at Savannah State (3-4, 2-3)

After an 0-4 start to the season, the Maroon Tigers have reeled off three straight wins with a 31-7 victory last week against Lane. Miles Scott continues to lead the charge offensively for Morehouse. Against the Dragons he completed 21 of 32 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions. Receivers Eric Stephens, Maurie Veney and Azari Brown all hauled in a touchdown reception. Defensively, Morehouse held Lane to just seven points and totally disrupted their arial attack, holding the Dragons passing attack to a paltry 6 of 23 for 56 yards and two interceptions.

Savannah State played a great game defensively in allowing zero points to Fort Valley State last week. But unfortunately, the Tigers offense failed to score as well and a punt return for a touchdown by Fort Valley State was good enough to defeat SSU. The Tigers tried a variety of quarterbacks with no sustained offense. The Tigers were held to under 100 yards of total offense. Defensively, Savannah State combined for nine tackles-for-loss and three sacks.

This is a typical offense vs defense showdown. Who will shine the brightest?

PREDICTION

Morehouse 24 Savannah State 19

Allen (2-5, 2-3) at Tuskegee (2-5, 1-4)

The Yellow Jackets are coming off of a bye on the heels of a tough 23-20 loss to Savannah State. Allen can get back to .500 in conference play with a win over the Golden Tigers.

Tuskegee was rock solid defensively in holding Albany State to just seven points last Saturday. The Golden Tigers shut down the passing attack of the Golden Rams and played bend but don’t break defense in allowing a hefty number of rushing yards, but very few points. Offensively, freshman quarterback Bryson McGrew completed only 22.5 percent of his passes for 73 yards and a pick. Tuskegee must be much better offensively this week if they want to get back in the win column.

This game feels like a coin flip.

PREDICTION

Tuskegee 20 Allen 13

Fort valley State (2-5, 2-3) at Lane (0-7, 0-5)

As I mentioned in last weeks column, the Wildcats can beat anyone or lose to anyone. Even though they were unable to score offensively last week, an incredible defensive effort to go along with a punt return touchdown was enough to give them a 7-0 victory over Savannah State. Don Hudson took the majority of snaps behind center as he completed 9 of 15 passes for 81 yards without a turnover. Defensively, Omarion Roach had two tackles-for-loss as well as two sacks while his teammate Darnell Stephens had three picks and three pass breakups.

The Dragons were knotted at seven apiece against Morehouse last week before things got away from them. Quarterback Nick Billoups didn’t have his best day, completing only four of his 17 pass attempts. He threw one interception, but to his credit that ball went off the receiver’s chest and ended up in a Morehouse players hand. Peyton Nero was a bright spot offensively for Lane as he toted the rock 15 times for 137 yards and a touchdown.

Can Lane finally get off the schneid or will Fort Valley State make it two-in-a-row?

PREDICTION

Fort Valley State 20 Lane 6
