Week 5 Matchups (SIAC teams denoted in bold)
Central State (1-4, 1-3) at Fort Valley State (1-3, 1-1)
The Marauders got their first win of the season last week with a 42-13 triumph over Lane College. Central State’s offense was led by a three-headed monster at running back. DaVontay Young, Jaden Bossie and Donalz Barker combined for 210 yards on the ground on 26 combined carries. Dominique Davis continues to be a disrupter defensively. He led the Marauders defensive charge with 12 total tackles, two tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery.
Fort Valley State got off the shneid themselves last week. The Wildcats played yet another close game, but this time they came out on the winning side. Jai’que Hart was fantastic from the quarterback position, completing 14 of 16 passes for 271 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Alexander Wilson found paydirt twice from the running back position. While the Wildcats did yield over 400 yards of offense to Tuskegee, they were very opportunistic on the defensive side of the ball. As a unit they created seven tackles-for-loss, three sacks and two interceptions.
Both Central State and Fort Valley State found the win column for the first time last week, the question now becomes who can keep the winning streak going.
PREDICTION
Fort Valley State 34 Central State 20
Savannah State (2-2, 1-2) at South Carolina State (2-3, 0-0)
After a two-game winning streak, Savannah State suffered a tough home loss to Kentucky State. Quarterback Fabian Walker took over after the first two weeks for Christian Burks and ignited the offense against Miles College. Walker started against KSU and finished 11 of 19 for 113 yards and three picks before being pulled in favor of Burks. Burks came in and finished 13 of 22 for 165 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Savannah State struggled to stop the Thorobreds offense as Kentucky state was very efficient in putting up 37 points.
South Carolina State has struggled this year against FBS competition and is 2-1 against FCS competition in three close games. South Carolina State is a looking to get to .500 before they start MEAC play.
Can Savannah State figure out their quarterback position against a DI team this week. That’ll be important for the Tigers before they re-enter SIAC play.
PREDICTION
South Carolina State 41 Savannah State 16
Allen (2-3, 2-0) at Benedict (4-0, 3-0)
The box score for Allen last week could be deceiving. The Yellow Jackets quarterback Jamir Dismukes was 23 of 31 for 286 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. It would be easy to think that the QB who put up those numbers would be on the winning side of a 57-14 game, but that was not the case for Allen a week ago. The Yellow Jackets have been a bit up-and-down this season but the play of Dismukes and running game led by Fabian Duncan always gives Allen a chance to be competitive.
Benedict continues to be the darlins of the SIAC this year. They were not predicted to finish near the top of the league, but they are sitting pretty in first place as we enter October. The tigers have found their quarterback as Darius Ocean has taken the reigns from Jackson Jensen. Ocean finished 9 of 20 for 213 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions a week ago. Big plays seem to be their modus operandi since ocean has taken over. Three receivers caught passes of at least forty yards last week against CAU. Defensively Benedict has been strong all season, allowing just 48 points through four games.
Can Benedict maintain their first-place position with a victory over Allen this week?
PREDICTION
Benedict 31 Allen 21
Kentucky State (3-2, 3-1) at Miles (0-5, 0-2)
Kentucky State pulled off a big win last week on the road at Savannah State. They’ll travel south again this week as they head to Alabama to face Miles. The Thorobreds have been playing two quarterbacks all year; Torrence Bardell and Denim Johnson. Against Savannah State, Bardell had the hot hand and they let him take the majority of the snaps. He finished 134 yards and three touchdowns with no picks on just 10 pass attempts. Bardell also led the team in rushing with 95 yards and a touchdown. The Thorobreds defense managed to pick off SSU three times last week in securing victory.
Defending SIAC champions Miles took another loss last week, but for the first time all season, they had a chance at victory ;ate in the game. Miles was playing an FCS Division I school in Morgan State. Trailing 17-0 midway through the third quarter it looked like Miles was in for another tough finish, but the Golden Bears dug deep and made the contest quite competitive down the stretch. Brinley Vandiver, who took over for incumbent quarterback Kam Ivory a few weeks ago played his best football to date. Vandiver threw two second half touchdowns and also led a drive that ended in a field goal to tie the game at 17 late in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, that wasn't quite enough as Morgan State scored with just over a minute to go in regulation to take home the win.
Can Miles finally get over the hump this week or will the Thorobreds make it three wins in a row?
PREDICTION
Miles 23 Kentucky State 21
Albany State (3-1, 2-0) at Lane (0-2, 0-4)
The Golden Rams were quite dominant again last week against Allen. The offense lit up the scoreboard behind a running game that tallied 285 yards and six touchdowns on a total of 26 carries. Seven different players managed to touch paydirt for Albany State last week as the offense was fantastic outside of two interceptions. Defensively the Rams allowed over 426 yards against Allen, but they only yielded 14 points to their offense.
The Dragons had a tough week against Central State as both teams were looking for their first win of the season. Lane was defeated 42-13 in a game that was within 10 points early in the fourth quarter. Lane was led by quarterback Nick Billoups who threw for 120 yards and rushed for a team high 64 yards. Defensively, the Dragons held Central State to only 74 yards passing. But the 209 yards they gave up on the ground proved to be the difference in the game.
Two teams going in different directions here. Albany State need not get caught sleeping as Lane has some playmakers on the field.
PREDICTION
Albany State 41 Lane 16
Tuskegee (2-3, 1-2) at Morehouse (0-2, 0-4)
The Golden Tigers hit the road this week to play Morehouse after losing a tight one at home a week ago to Fort Valley State. Tuskegee quarterback Raequan Beal continues to put up big numbers in the passing game as he threw for an astounding 380 yards and two touchdowns against FVSU. Unfortunately, he had two costly interceptions. EJ Hall led all wide outs with three catches for 81 yards while seven different Golden Tigers had 30 plus yards receiving. Kaquan Kimber led Tuskegee with nine total tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack on the defensive side of the ball.
Morehouse was very balanced offensively a week ago as they passed for 267 yards and ran for 97 yards. Nicholas Woodford was very solid in the running game as he picked up 95 yards on 12 carries while crossing the pylon twice. The five sacks Morehouse allowed stalled some offensive drives. Defensively, Morehouse gave up over 400 yards of offense to a very good Edward Waters team.
Can Morehouse get off the schneid this week or will Tuskegee get back in the win column?
PREDICTION
Tuskegee 31 Morehouse 20
