Week 6 Matchups (SIAC teams denoted in bold)

Morehouse (1-4, 1-2) at Central State (2-4, 2-3)

Morehouse got a huge win this past Saturday in the 102nd playing of the Tuskegee/Morehouse Classic. The Maroon Tigers trailed 17-0 in the second quarter, but quarterback Miles Scott was absolutely phenomenal in accounting for 367 yards. That’s right, Morehouse only had 362 total yards of offense but Scott rushed for 41 yards and passed for 326 yards. The rest of the team was negative five yards rushing. The incredible play from Scott earned him offensive player of the week and it helped Morehouse earn their first victory of the season.

The Marauders won their second game in a row after an 0-4 start with a hard fought 18-14 victory over Fort Valley State. The game was a defensive battle that once again saw defensive stalwart Dominique Davis II dominate for Central State. He again led his team in tackles with nine. While he didn’t register a sack like he usually does, he made up for it with two interceptions as well as a tackle-for-loss.

Both Central State and Morehouse would like to keep their winning streak alive. Who can best carry their momentum over this week as well as execute at a high level?

PREDICTION

Morehouse 24 Central State 17

Clark-Atlanta (2-3, 1-2) at Albany State (4-1, 3-0)

Clark-Atlanta is coming off of a bye week and they’ll want to get the bitter taste of a 59-24 loss out of their mouth from the last time they were on the field. Their competition presents no easy task as Albany State has been one of the dominant teams in the SIAC thus far. Quarterback Zy McDonald has been very careful with the ball having not thrown an interception all season. He’ll be a key player for the Panthers this week.

The Golden Rams continue their dominant trek through the SIAC conference as they obliterated Lane last week to the tune of 47-6. Star quarterback Isiah Knowles was out last week for Albany State and backup Jayden Kinney struggled in his absence only completing seven of his 20 pass attempts for 78 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The running game was there to pick up the slack as the Golden Rams ran for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, ASU was in Lane’s backfield all day as they combined for an astounding 12 tackles-for-loss.

Albany State is back at home and in a great position for a chance at the SIAC crown. Clark-Atlanta is trying to right the ship after two losses in a row.

PREDICTION

Albany State 48 Clark-Atlanta 27

Fort Valley State (1-4, 1-2) at Benedict (4-0, 5-0)

Fort Valley State was plagued by turnovers in their homecoming loss to Central State last week. After leading 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, four turnovers were the difference in a tight 18-14 loss. Jai’que Hart, Saadiq Teel and Don Hudson all took turns playing quarterback for the Wildcats and the three combined for 197 yards, two touchdowns but four costly picks. Defensively they did a great job of holding Central State to only eight first downs and 220 total yards. While they didn’t win the game, it looks like they may have won the fight based on the video footage of the brawl that surfaced online. Hopefully, they can move forward from this in a positive way and get back to playing Wildcat football.

The Tigers came from behind to defeat Allen 38-28 this past week and that keeps their special undefeated season going. The offense really got going after Darius Ocean replaced Jackson Jensen as the starter. But this past week, Ocean took a step back completing only nine of 26 passes for 98 yards and three interceptions. The running game picked up the slack in rushing for 244 yards and two touchdowns while averaging a pounding six yards per carry. After an Allen touchdown late in the third quarter, Benedict did all of the fourth quarter scoring as the defense stood strong and helped the Tigers preserve the win and keep them atop the SIAC.

FVSU can absolutely play with anyone as their scoring differential is marginal even though they carry a 1-4 record. Benedict is hoping to stay in the driver’s seat in the SIAC as they host the Wildcats.

PREDICTION

Benedict 23 Fort Valley State 14

Edward Waters (4-1, 3-0) at Kentucky State (4-2, 4-1)

Edward Waters is coming off of a bye week after a thrilling come from behind victory against Morehouse. Things begin and end with Southern University transfer quarterback Noah Bodden. He has been outstanding all season for the Tigers. He currently sits third in passing yards with 1188 while also throwing nine touchdowns to only three picks. And all three of those picks were thrown in a loss to Bethune-Cookman who plays at the Division I level. Interim head coach Brian Jenkins has finally gotten the interim removed as he is now the official head coach for the Edward Waters Tigers. Congratulations Coach Jenkins. This is a great honor for him and well-deserved.

The Thorobreds continue to shine after losing two of their first three games of the season. KSU is riding a three-game winning streak with great play from quarterback Torrence Bardell. He leads the SIAC conference with 12 touchdown passes and has only thrown two interceptions. Receiver Jon McCall hauled in two of those touchdowns last week against Miles while also grabbing eight passes for 84 yards. Defensively Kentucky State is ranked in the middle-of-the-pack in the SIAC, but they have been a bend but don’t break defense and have gotten important stops when they have needed. Against Miles last week the defense was able to generate three interceptions.

This is the marquee game of the week and could play a significant role in who stands atop the SIAC at seasons end.

PREDICTION

Kentucky State 35 Edward Waters 34

Miles (0-6, 0-3) at Lane (0-5, 0-3)

Miles college has had a far fall from grace this season as the SIAC champs from a season ago find themselves winless halfway through the season. Quarterback Kam Ivory has been out for the past few weeks and Brinley Vandiver has done some good things in his place. Against KSU last week he did throw for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns, but three costly picks ended drives for the Golden Bears. Glen Williams stood out offensively catching seven passes for 147 yards and a touchdown. Defensively Miles yielded over 400 yards to the Thorobreds.

Lane also finds themselves winless this year as they took a home loss to Albany State 47-6 last week. Quarterback Nick Billoups continues to be decent for the Dragons as he accounted for 109 total yards and scored their only touchdown. Defensively they were able to stack up five tackles-for-loss as well as creating a turnover.

Someone is getting off the shneid this week! No one wants to be winless and someone has a chance to get out of the very bottom of the SIAC standings. Who will it be?

PREDICTION

Miles 35 Lane 24

Savannah State (2-3, 1-2) at Allen (2-4, 2-2)

Savannah State had a tough week against Division I foe South Carolina State, losing 49-6. The Tigers did manage to score first, but that stopped shortly thereafter. Christian Burks was the primary quarterback this past week and he completed 11 of 21 passes for 116 yards with one interception. Defensively, Savannah State did a nice job against the run only allowing 46 yards. The Tigers pass defense struggled mightily against a very formidable South Carolina State passing attack.

The Yellow Jackets played a fantastic first three quarters against undefeated Benedict last week. They led 28-21 going into the fourth quarter before falling 38-28. Allen quarterback Jamir Dismukes accounted for over 200 yards and three touchdowns while receiver Marcus Fleming had a big day going over 100 yards receiving with a touchdown grab. Defensively, Allen held the Benedict passing game in check as they picked off three passes and only allowed 99 yards through the air. But they did yield 244 yards on the ground and that proved to be the difference in the game.

A big bounce back opportunity for both squads this week. Who can get back in the win column?

PREDICTION

Savannah State 27 Allen 24
