Week Three Matchups and Predictions
Matt’s Matchup of the Week
Frostburg State (1-1) at West Liberty (2-1)
Frost St. picked up a huge non-conference win over Assumption last week. Running back KJ Smothers was a big part of the reason why as he tallied 119 yards on 31 carries and crossed the pylon twice. Quarterback Jordan Brooks was efficient in throwing for 212 yards while completing over two-thirds of his 20 attempts. Defensively, the Bobcats played great, holding an explosive Assumption offense to 275 total yards. Frost St. trailed at halftime 13-3 and had only given up 99 yards at the break. Two weeks in a row they started slow, but picked up the pace in the second half.
West Liberty has been a bit of a surprise this season under first year head coach, Chad Salisbury. Although Salisbury is known for his ability to develop quarterbacks, right now its his running back Hunter Patterson who is toting the load for the Hilltoppers. Patterson rushed for 191 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries. Kohl Meisman was solid at the QB spot completing 13 of 17 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, this will be the best offense WLU has faced since Walsh in their opener.

This game may look lopsided on paper but Charleston has had a tougher road thus far and they certainly have a shot Thursday night. Charleston has played California, Grand Valley and North Greenville. Concord is at home and has won two games by an average of five points. Can they stay hot at home?

Glenville State (1-1) at Mercyhurst (0-3)
This game is nearly impossible to get a read on as GSU got beat by 35 against a DI FCS school and beat Millersville in a close game, although Millersville is a DII team that hasn’t won a game since 2024. Mercyhurst has been beaten by a grand point total of 164-31 through three games. Although two of those three were against lower-level DI FBS teams in New Mexico and New Mexico State. If the Pioneers are to be successful, they’ll need dual-threat quarterback JD Sherrod to have an outstanding game. It’s hard to pick DII against DI even though this particular DI may be one of the worst out there.

Mercyhurst 38 Glenville State 31
Fairmont State (0-3) at Wheeling (1-2)
Fair. St is looking to play their first competitive game of the year. To their credit they’ve had a tough schedule, but have lost by large margins of 23, 22 and 20. In their last outing, they were within four points at 21-17 in the fourth quarter against number nine ranked Findlay. Three interceptions and -46 yards rushing by quarterback Deven Sisler must improve. They were able to get 144 yards on 28 carries out of their running backs. Wheeling, who started out with 7-0 first quarter lead took a tough loss last week in a game I picked them to win. They never scored again and gave up 23 points. Landon Lutz is a playmaker at quarterback but they’ll need more balance this week as they had 42 pass attempts and a total of 10 running plays if you don’t count QB scrambles.

West Virginia Wesleyan (1-2) at West Virginia State (1-1)
WVWU has lost two straight after winning their opener while WVSU is coming off of an early bye after losing to DI FCS Robert Morris 29-9. Joe Dailey and Bryan Johnson have been playmakers at quarterback for the Yellow Jackets in a rotating system. They’ll look to play like they did against Chowan in week one again this week against WVWU. The Bobcats will need to limit turnovers against WVSU if they want to start conference play 1-0. Mike Evans Jr. threw four touchdowns and no interceptions in their week one win. Before being benched against Shippensburg last week, he’d thrown three picks and only one touchdown in their two losses.
