Week Two Matchups and Predictions
Matt’s Matchup of the week
Assumption (0-1) at Frostburg State (0-1)
Frostburg State will face Assumption in their home opener Saturday. After a terrible start last week and trailing 28-3 against Shepherd in their season-opening contest, Frost St. really turned it on and dominated the second half to nearly pull off a huge comeback, falling 34-26. Printed in my weekly rewind you’ll see that Frostburg really dominated the box score. Jordan Brooks had a nice game at quarterback for Frost. St, passing for 307 yards to go along with two touchdowns and a pick. Ray Adames was his big play threat, hauling in a team high six passes for 125 yards and catching both touchdowns. The Bobcats defense played great up-and-down the field, but allowed Shepherd to convert three of four fourth down attempts as well as gave up scores every time the Rams entered the redzone.
Assumption played every quarter evenly with number four ranked Kutztown last week except the second quarter when they were outscored 21-0. The final score was 56-35. Kutztown has a great offense, but Frost. St needs to take advantage of an Assumption defense that is vulnerable to big plays. Assumption quarterback Dom Santiago was fantastic in throwing for 343 yards, 3 touchdowns and only one interception while completing over 70% of his passes. This game could be a shootout as both of these teams won their respective conferences a year ago and will hope to do the same again this year. While this will not affect conference play for either squad, neither team wants to start the season 0-2.

Week Two Matchups--Keys to victory
Shippensburg (0-1) at West Virginia Wesleyan (1-1)
WVW needs to be balanced on offense with Mike Evans Jr. delivering the ball all over the field and mixing in the run with a committee of guys. Defensively, they played well in week zero and not so well in week one. But the competition was vastly different. We should get a solid feel of who the Bobcats are after this week.

Charleston (0-2) at North Greenville (1-0)
Charleston has had two lopsided defeats to start the season, but in their defense (no pun intended) they’ve played two really good teams. They have another tough team ahead as NGU are the defensing Conference Carolina champions. Charleston got up 10-7 on GVSU and 3-0 Cal U of P. Things went a bit off the rails in both games after that. Matt Frye makes plays in the passing game, but he’ll need to limit turnovers. Defensively, they’ve given up an average of 423 yards per game. NGU scored 40 last week. But their competition was much lighter than what Charleston has faced.

North Greenville 34 Charleston 27
Fairmont State (0-2) at Findlay (1-0)
Fair. St has a tough matchup for the third straight week. This teams load will get lighter once they enter conference play. No slight intended on the MEC, but Div. I Dayton, Bloomsburg and now top ten Findlay is a tough way to start. The last six quarters Fair. St has been solid, but offensively, the quarterbacks have combined for six interceptions and have been sacked a total of ten times. They have average over 120 yards per game on the ground. Fair. St must limit the turnovers, sacks and self-inflicted mistakes to have any chance in this one.

Findlay 45 Fairmont State 10
West Liberty (1-1) at Post (0-1)
WLU is coming off of a hard-fought victory over Seton Hill last week, scoring the only fourth quarter points in a 28-24 win. They finished strong in their opener as well, but came up just short against Walsh. Even though their new head coach is a passing guru, it’s been Hunter Patterson and his 361 yards on the ground that has been the main source of offense for the Hilltoppers. They play a Post team that didn’t look very good in their opener, putting up only 225 yards of offense and 13 points. But this will be Post’s home opener and West Liberty’s first road game of 2026.

West Liberty 34 Post 23
Lake Erie (1-0) at Wheeling (1-1)
Wheeling has decided to play all of their non-conference games against the GMAC. After splitting their first two, defeating Thomas More and losing to Walsh, they will now play Lake Erie. Wheeling is very balanced on offense, averaging 244.5 yards-per-game passing and 172 yards-per-game rushing. Landon Lutz has been solid under center but has thrown a pick in both games. Lake Erie had a big win in Week Zero by 28 points over Saint Aslem. Not sure how good SAC is. Wheeling won a tight one at Lake Erie last year.
