Harlon Hill Trophy Winner: Curt Anes, QB, 2002

Grand Valley State became a national power in Division II football under the leadership of former head coach Brian Kelly. Guiding the Lakers from 1991 through 2003, Kelly would lead the Lakers to back-to-back national championships in 2002 and 2003 before departing for opportunities in Division I. His successor Chuck Martin would also help the program to national titles in 2005 and 2006. Grand Valley State remains the only program to win four championships in five years. Overall, the Lakers have made 20 trips to the Division II playoffs and have appeared in the national finals six times. Since becoming one of the most successful programs in Division II, GVSU has also produced some of the best NFL talent to come out of the division. Alumni include Brandon Carr (DB), Matthew Judon (DL), Dan Skuta (DL), Charles Johnson (WR), David Kircus (WR), Tim Lelito (OL) and more. Former quarterback Cullen Finnerty (2003-2006) finished his carreer as the winnigest quarterback in college football history, with a career record of 51-4. Finnerty's predecessor Curt Anes was named Harlon Hill Trophy winner after the 2002 season. The Lakers' home field, Lubbers Stadium, is considered one of the best game day venues and environments in the nation.  The venue officially seats 10,444 but with standing room viewing areas, attendance frequently exceeds capacity. Record attendance at Lubbers Stadium is 17,007, acheived Oct. 16, 2021.
