Northwest Missouri State has more national championships (6) and more national finals appearances (10) than any program in Division II history. The Bearcats also hold the Division II record for most playoff appearances (26) and most consecutive seasons with a playoff appearance (18). College Football Hall of Fame coach Mel Tjeerdsma led the Bearcats from 1994 to 2010. During his tenure, the Bearcats accumulated a record of 183-43, with 10 MIAA Championships and three national titles. Tjeerdsma's successor Adam Dorrell led the Bearcats to three more national championships with all three resulting in undefeated seasons. Alumnus John McMenamn was hired to take over the program in December, 2024.

Gorillas and Bearcats to meet in Kansas City in 2025 and 2026

June 9, 2025By D2Football.com staffMIAA rivals Pittsburg State and Northwest Missouri State have announced plans to move their annual meeting to Kansas City in 2025 and 2026. To accommodate the move, Pitts State will give up a home game date in 2025 with the Bearcats losing a home game in 2026.  The series is no stranger in Kansas City, with the teams meeting on 13 previous occassions at  Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Kansas City Chiefs.
